Position Summary:
Database Administrator is responsible for developing, implementing and providing ongoing support of relational database technology, systems, services and business applications throughout Packaging Corporation of America with the end goal of ensuring that all database management systems are running at peak performance, are secure, recoverable and fully upgraded. This involves assessing new technology, determining opportunities and coordinating all aspects of development to ensure effective support of the business functions.

This position is part of a team that supports a) the Oracle RAC 12c database systems hosting PeopleSoft and Data Warehouse databases b) the Oracle database systems at 90-plus plant locations running manufacturing business applications c) the systems on SQL Server databases at eight of our Mills and companywide.


Principle Accountabilities:
Develop and maintain efficient physical database models and identify/resolve data structure issues to meet both Corporate and plant business requirements.
Provide and manage support for database systems and services to ensure data is available 24x7, which includes maintenance, capacity planning, data recovery and structural and data integrity.
Monitor and optimize system performance and identify and resolve any defects or deficiencies in a proactive manner to ensure the business applications are operating properly.
Interface with the business development teams during the data modeling efforts, logical and physical, to clarify the application design and ensure the best possible database structure.
Work with software vendors to address issues regarding databases and management software to ensure the business application is functioning according to the user's expectations.
Demonstrate an understanding of project methodology to report and prioritize work to ensure all tasks and projects are completed in a timely manner and meet the business groups' needs.
Establishes and maintains relationships with corporate application and development teams as well as plant level system engineers to ensure operational efficiency
Acts as a database advisor to proprietary application development project team for front and back end development
Knows and follows policies and procedures of the company, shares information that would benefit other members of the team and finds ways to improve the delivery of service to our customers.

Decision Making:
The Database Administrator is required to make independent decisions based on sound industry practices and existing corporate regulations. The Database Administrator is expected to drive performance of the team to meet his/her project goals. The Database Administrator is expected to take general directions, and from those directions make decisions as to his/her approach to completing assigned projects, and is expected to determine how to operate and conduct assigned tasks within the established standards and procedures.

Interactions with Customers and Contacts
