Crain's Chicago Business is a leading source of news, analysis, and information on the business, economic, political, and civic landscape of Chicago. For over four decades, we have been providing insightful coverage that impacts the local business community. As we continue to grow, we are seeking an experienced News Editor to join our dynamic team and play a key role in shaping our coverage.

We are looking for a seasoned News Editor with a deep understanding of Chicago's political, business, economic, and civic landscape. The ideal candidate will have a passion for journalism, a keen eye for detail, and the ability to guide a team of reporters to deliver high-quality coverage to an audience of Chicago's top leaders and decision-makers. This editor will work collaboratively with reporters, assigning and editing stories, ensuring accuracy, and maintaining Crain's editorial standards. This editor will help the Managing Editor to guide day-to-day breaking news coverage as well as longer-form investigative, analytical and perspective pieces.

This is a "hybrid" role collaborating 3 days/week with the entire newsroom in our Chicago office.

Responsibilities:
Collaborative Leadership: Work closely with reporters to shape and guide coverage of Chicago's business and political landscape. Foster a collaborative and positive work environment within the newsroom.
Story Assignment and Editing: Assign and edit news stories, features, and analysis pieces to ensure accuracy, relevance, and adherence to Crain's editorial standards.
Content Planning: Collaborate with the editorial team to plan and execute coverage strategies, identifying key issues and trends in Chicago's business and political spheres.
Community Engagement: Build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders in the Chicago business community. Attend relevant events, conferences, and meetings to stay abreast of developments.
Mentorship and Development: Provide guidance and mentorship to reporters, helping them develop their skills and contribute to their professional growth.
Adaptability: Stay informed about industry trends, new media formats, and emerging technologies to ensure Crain's remains at the forefront of journalism innovation.

Qualifications:
Minimum of 5 years of experience in journalism, with a strong background in covering Chicago's political, business, economic, and civic news.
Proven ability to lead and inspire a team of journalists. Experience in assigning and editing stories.
In-depth knowledge of the Chicago business environment, political dynamics, economic trends, and civic issues.
Ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment. Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Exceptional editorial judgment with a commitment to accuracy, fairness, and integrity in reporting.
Comfortable working in a fast-paced news environment. Willingness to adapt to evolving industry trends and technologies.

This position is exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act and is not eligible for overtime pay.

Pay Transparency Disclosure:
The estimated salary range for this position is $70,000 to $95,000.

The final salary offering will take into accounta wide range of factors, including experience, accomplishments and location. The salary range provided should not be considered as a salary limit or cap. In addition to base salary, Crain also offers competitive benefits including retirement plan savings contributions and bonus opportunities based on individual and company performance.
