Job Description

Various roles are available and is dependent on the candidate's prior experience and area of interest. Will determine placement during the pre-screening phone interview.

Pharmacy Technician Ladder:

Senior

Selects, prepares and/or compounds non-intravenous medications for patients under the direction of a registered pharmacist.

Follows aseptic technique and procedures for handling non-hazardous and hazardous medications, according to USP 795 and USP 800 regulations.

Fills medication carts and delivers medications to patient care areas.

Fills automated dispensing machines in patient care areas.

Prepackages bulk medications into unit dose packages as needed.

IV Specialist

Selects, prepares and/or compounds intravenous medications for patients under the direction of a registered pharmacist.

Follows aseptic technique and procedures for handling non-hazardous and hazardous medications, according to USP 797 and USP 800 regulations.

Cleans hoods and calibrates pumps according to established procedures.

Assist pharmacist with medication preparation during codes.

IV Chemotherapy Specialist

Selects, prepares and/or compounds non-intravenous and intravenous antineoplastic (chemotherapy) medications under the direction of a registered pharmacist

Follows aseptic technique and procedures for handling non-hazardous and hazardous medications, according to USP 795, USP 797 and USP 800 regulations.

Additional duties for all roles:


Orders, receives, and monitors drug inventories.

Follows all pharmacy-controlled medication policies and procedures.

Participates in quality assurance and quality improvement activities of the department.

Triages calls and electronic pharmacy information system messages.

Assists with the work activities and training of new pharmacy technicians.

Participates in peer evaluation of other pharmacy employees.

Adheres to all hospital, departmental and regulatory policies and procedures.

Completes all assigned mandatory education and competencies on an annual basis.

Rotate through various work areas of the pharmacy and shifts.

Required to work weekends and holidays.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

High school diploma or GED equivalent required.

Completion of two years of college with at least one general mathematics course preferred.

Licensure or eligibility for licensure as Registered Pharmacy Technician in the State of Illinois.

Certification by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board.

Must be able to read, write and speak English.

Must have good interpersonal and communication skills to function within the team concept and interact with tact and courtesy with all hospital employees and customers.

Must have good manual dexterity. Must be able to differentiate colors. Must be able to left at least 10 pounds.

Work Schedule:

Multiple shift opportunities

New hires typically start on evening shift first until day shift openings become available.

May need to cover overnight shift when dedicated overnight technicians have PTO. Shifts are filled with volunteers first and are then assigned by seniority.
