Job Description

The Prototyping & Tooling Department is responsible for building and maintaining production tooling used in the manufacturing and assembly processes (including stamping and forming dies, molds, fixtures, gauges, assembly tooling, and product testing equipment) and producing prototypes and components associated with the research and development (R&D) of new, or improvements to existing S&C products.

The Tool & Model Maker-Advanced troubleshoots complex failures by utilizing 2D drawings, blueprints, and 3D models to operate manual and CNC machine tools, such as lathes, punch drills, and grinders to craft and fix stamping/forming dies, molds, fixtures, gauges, and other parts to exact specifications & tolerances. The Tool & Model-Intermediate Maker is also responsible for utilizing CNC to model and evaluate parts and to create standard setup and work instructions for the team.
Responsibilities
Interpret 2D drawings, blueprints, and 3D models to visualize outputs, determine materials required, CNC programming requirements, and machines to be used to fabricate parts
Troubleshoot, produce, fit, and repair various types of complex fixtures, dies, gages, tools, etc
Compute dimensions, plan layouts, and establish the sequence of operations. Measure and mark out materials and castings using various precision measuring instruments to confirm that each part conforms to exact specifications and gives accurate time estimates of repairs
Use CNC and various other programs to evaluate and model parts, including complex free-form part creating based on 3D profiles and utilizing Esprit to blend multiple freeform features and determine inspection information
Read and understand complex blueprints, sketches, models, program and operate CNC machines to repair or fabricate tools and dies
Operate conventional or CNC machine shop equipment such as lathes, milling machines, and grinders, and wire EDM Inspect tooling for production readiness
Use machine tools and hand tools to use and assemble parts for dies, fixtures, jigs, gauges, and tools in order to make, repair, or modify them
Develops and writes concise technical documents, including set-up procedures, work instructions, and troubleshooting procedures
Record work and repair history of tooling in the electronic maintenance system
Mentors basic and intermediate-level team members in the completion of their work to help their professional growth
Identify continuous improvement opportunities and work in a self-directed manner to implement projects and optimize production processes
Understand and comply with all applicable Company policies and rules

Education & Minimum Qualifications
Required
High school diploma or equivalent
Completion of a formal apprenticeship program in tool and die making or equivalent experience
Skills, Knowledge & Experience
Required
10+ years of experience as a Tool, Die, and Mold Maker in a manufacturing setting, including experience in machining and stamping aluminum and multi-angle complex forming
2+ years of previous experience with electronic drawings such as AutoCAD, Pro-E, or Solid Works and the ability to modify existing drawings
Expert knowledge of techniques for troubleshooting in machining, including lathes, saws, drill presses, milling, turning, grinding, and CNC operation
Proficiency in reading engineering drawings and schematics
Demonstrated experience in using CAD software, including Gibbscam CAD/ CAM, NX CAM software
Strong communication skills to collaborate effectively with colleagues from different departments, including communicating technical status to the engineering or operations team
Ability to build and troubleshoot highly complex types of tools, including stamping/forming dies, molds, fixtures, gages, and assembly tooling, occasionally produced using custom cutting tooling
Strong attention to detail with the ability to accurately solve problems and determine solutions for various types of tooling issues
