Job Description
Short-term needs from July-September

Teaches children with emotional and/or learning problems and communicates the academic and behavioral progress of children. Understands and integrates into the delivery of patient care the needs of pediatric and adolescent patients in regard to their growth and development process. The position actively supports the Hospital's and the Department's quality goals and service excellence principles.

1. Clinical Service
* Provides daily instruction to patients with behavioral and emotional disorders.
* Creates daily lesson plans and delegation of work for staff, students and volunteers.
* Provides a safe, educational environment for the children (including classroom management
and maintenance).
* Completes an Educational Screening Assessment as indicated for each patient (Inpatient
Psychiatry Unit only).
* Communicates with parents regarding their children's educational and behavioral difficulties and
educates them about appropriate academic accommodations and/or special education
placement options as needed.
* Consults with school districts (parental consent required) to gather information about each
child's level of achievement and facilitates the child's transition from the program.
* Facilitates and advocates for appropriate school interventions including MDC/IEP procedures
as indicated.
* Attends school staffing's as necessary in coordination with primary therapists when indicated.
* Maintains appropriate documentation for each patient as outlined by program.
* Coordinates and supervises all requirements for billing of educational services per program.
* Attends and participates in all patient focused meetings as scheduled by program (i.e., rounds,
team meetings, case conferences, etc.).
* Prepares written educational summary and recommendations as indicated.
2. Team Membership
* Works cooperatively with the multidisciplinary team to enhance the quality of care provided to the patient population.
* Communicates clearly with team members utilizing formal and informal means.
* Attends and participates in staff meetings and supervision as scheduled by program.
* Consults with multidisciplinary team members about educational/school placement issues.
* Works with team members, Clinical Managers/Manager of Clinical Services and/or Unit Director to provide appropriate coverage for scheduled absences.
3. Leadership
* Provides supervision to designated personnel (trainees, interns and volunteers) as assigned per program, complete evaluations as required.
* Coordinates educational interns within the program/department.
* Participates in orientation of new employees and trainees.
* Collaborates with team members in writing/reviewing program and departmental policies and procedures as needed.
* Responsible for researching and recommending educational materials for purchase to the Clinical Managers/Manager of Clinical Services and/or Unit Director.
4. Professional Development
* Appropriately seeks out supervision to function in all professional roles.
* Maintains mandatory yearly reviews and professional certifications and licensure.
* Assumes responsibility for professional development through participation in continuing education events.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
1. Master's degree preferred from an accredited college or university required
2. State of Illinois Special Education Certification (Type 10)
3. Previous teaching experience with children who manifest emotional, behavioral and learning problems preferred.
4. Working knowledge of the principles of child development, special education materials, classroom management and diagnostic and prescriptive teaching techniques required.
5. Special physical requirements: sits and stands through the day. Must be able to physically restrain aggressive children.
