Job Summary:
Reporting to a Shift Supervisor, the Ammonia/Utilities Chemical Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the process and equipment in the Ammonia and Utilities sections.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Reporting to a Shift Supervisor, the Ammonia/Utilities Chemical Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the process and equipment in the Ammonia and Utilities sections.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
Environmental, Health & Safety
To actively participate in programs that impact on employee health and safety performance.
Display active participation in plant site safety programs including reporting hazards, participation in safety meetings and committees, and safe isolation and clearing of process equipment for repair.
Leadership Competencies

Process Control & Equipment Operation
Efficient and safe operation of equipment in assigned areas of responsibility, complying with process operating guidelines and procedures. This includes equipment operation during start up, shutdown and emergency situations.
Progression in established time frames to a fully qualified operator.

Equipment & Process Troubleshooting
*Troubleshoot process conditions during routine operation and plant upsets. Process information and mechanical problems to enable writing or Work Requests for repair.
*Be able to clear and isolate plant equipment for maintenance activities.

Quality Planning, Improvement and Teamwork
Support the initiatives of continuous improvement through teamwork and the application of the quality planning and improvement principles. This activity involves improvements to equipment in the Operator's area of responsibility and may involve providing assistance to other departments.

Monitoring and Communication:
To monitor the equipment and process variables, recording and reporting of data and observations to peers and supervision.
Perform regular equipment inspections, complete water analysis and make regular adjustments to ensure the equipment is operating in a safe and efficient manner.
Maintain shift logs and complete regular checklists and communicate information to supervision and peers.

Trouble Shooting:
Investigate unusual process or mechanical situations and take or recommend corrective action. It is expected the Operator will complete some of these activities on his own but may also work with team members or the maintenance/engineering department to resolve these issues.
Training:
To develop and maintain a competent understanding of the process, equipment, and operating practices and procedures. Train and become proficient in all the operating areas and learn the operation of new equipment installations or new process designs.

Other
To maintain an acceptable level of attendance as defined in the Personnel Practices & Procedures Manual.
Understands and complies with established departmental processes and procedures designed to support internal controls efforts. Identifies and brings to the attention of department management internal controls deficiencies.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:

Must have a minimum of a Grade Twelve Diploma along with Post-Secondary education in an accredited power engineering program. A 3rd Class Power Engineering Certificate is a minimum requirement and preference is given to a 2nd Class Power Engineering Certificate. The incumbent must have a valid driver's license.
