POSITION TITLE: Cook
LOCATION/DEPT: Harbor Light
REPORTS TO: Food Service Manager
FLSA CATEGORY: Non-Exempt
STATUS TYPE: RFT
Hours: 4:30am - 1:00pm
DEPARTMENT MISSION
To provide leadership using policies, procedures and available systems to support the Harbor Light Center in meeting the mission of The Salvation Army
PROGRAM/CLIENT ENVIRONMENT
The backgrounds of the clients served by The Harbor Light Program will manifest a variety of inappropriate behaviors. When this occurs, employees are to respond within the context of the treatment environment of the site. Employee conduct (actions, dress, etc) and interactions (conversations, written communications, etc.) with clients must also be within the treatment environment of the facility.
OUTCOMES
The Cook is primarily responsible the preparation of meals for the nutrition program.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
All meals are prepared consistent with the menu identified.
Food that qualifies is prepared for next day. Supplies are obtained from the storerooms, coolers or freezer.
The receipt of deliveries (food and non food items) and maintenance of food service areas are organized and supervised. Food and equipment are secured from theft.
The food service area is cleaned and maintained on a daily basis at standards which insure full compliance with all health and sanitation requirements. This includes the cleaning of the ovens and skillet. All completed tasks are documented. All pertinent documentation is maintained.
All kitchen staff are supervised including volunteers who are assigned to the Food Service Department.
All other duties as assigned.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS
This position reports to the Food Service Manager.
In contacts related to this position's duties, this individual acts as a representative of The Salvation Army and its mission.

PERFORMANCE MEASUREMENTS
This individual will be evaluated on how effective the outcomes of this position are achieved, as well as timeliness, accuracy, and completeness of accomplishing assigned goals.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
One year of food service experience.
Must posses current Chicago Sanitation License.
COMPENTENCIES
Able to work as a team member and well with others.
Good communication and interpersonal skills.
Able to work at fairly fast pace.
Demonstrated ability to use initiative and be a self starter.
An attention to detail.
A positive attitude and ability to be flexible in light of changing job situations/priorities.
Supportive of the mission of The Salvation Army.
POSITION LIMITATIONS
This individual will only commit Army resources that have been allocated or approved.
This individual will keep the Food Service Manager informed on all critical issues relating to their area of responsibility.
This individual will adhere to all Army policies and procedures in carrying out the responsibilities of this position.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT
This position is required to do light physical work. Must be able to walk up two flights of stairs and lift up to 70lbs.
In order to successfully perform the essential functions of this position, the employee is regularly required to use standard kitchen equipment.
The work environment for this position includes a kitchen environment with a low to high noise level.
Must be able to work with clients that have poor social skills, suffer from mental illness, and have substance abuse problems.
