A. POSITION PURPOSE:
Complete a Production Management Development Program (PMDP) training program in order to become Production Supervisor in our high-speed manufacturing facilities across the country. This program provides an introduction to closure manufacturing that will serve as a foundation throughout the employee's careers with Silgan. This is a hands-on position that is heavily engaged in day-to-day production activities, manufacturing billions of metal closures on an annual basis. Individuals in the PMDP will work with experienced employees to learn to operate, maintain and adjust all production equipment. Upon completion of the PMDP, Production Supervisors are expected to effectively supervise assigned employees to efficiently produce a high-quality product.

B. SUBORDINATE STRUCTURE AND FUNCTIONS:

Number of employees supervised: 10-35
Non/Exempt positions that report to this position: Hourly production, maintenance and quality employees

C. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Required to learn, understand and positively impact safety, quality, standard operating procedures, employee relations and continuous improvement

2. Safety - Train/enforce on safety procedures/rules. Active involvement in employee safety, equipment guarding and ensuring overall safe workplace

3. Quality - Apply SPC principles and basic quality tools (i.e. diagrams, flow/run/control charts, analysis, etc.)

4. Standard Operating Procedures - Understand, use and train employees on SOPs. Must have the ability to lead manufacturing unit through use of SOPs

5. Employee Relations - Develop effective communication skills that enable the ability to direct/assign work assignments in compliance with the collective bargaining agreement and cultivate a positive work environment. Supervisors are expected to develop and mentor employees

6. Continuous Improvement - Foster an environment conducive to achieving continuous improvement/lead objectives. Develop ability to operate in a lean manufacturing environment using 5S and other continuous improvement tools

7. All other duties as assigned

D. DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience:
High school diploma or equivalent education

Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Mechanical and technical skills/aptitude
Strong communication skills, ability to effectively influence others, and problem solve
Must be self-motivated and work well with little to no supervisor
Strong leadership skills with ability to develop others
Performance management
Statistical knowledge
Computer skills - ability to use Microsoft Office Suite
Visual mechanics (blue prints and descriptions)

E. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Trade school and/or education
Skilled trades (machinist, mechanic, millwright, tool and die, electrician) or engineering experience
Prior experience in a production supervisory capacity
Highly desirable for candidates have the ability to relocate following successful completion of PMDP

Works under the general direction of the Department Manager

H. WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The noise level of the work environment is loud, requiring ear protection. The condition of the air contains heat, cold, dust, chemicals and high-speed manufacturing equipment. The surface on which work is performed is level. Approximately 6 hours per day are spent working under time pressures, while approximately 2 hours per day are spent working rapidly. 80% of the time is spent working on the production floor. 100% of the time is spent indoors. Limited travel.
