The Department of Computer Science at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign is hiring an Assistant Director or Coordinator of Education for IMMERSE, the Center for Immersive Computing (https://immerse.illinois.edu). Immersive computing, including augmented/virtual/mixed/extended reality, digital twins, metaverse, and spatial computing, has the potential to transform most industries. IMMERSE brings together campus-wide expertise in immersive technologies, applications, and human factors to perform research, educate a new workforce, and build infrastructure that will accelerate a new era of immersive computing.

We seek motivated and dynamic applicants with strong communications skills who will help shape and execute the vision of this exciting new center. The Assistant Director of Education/Coordinator of Education is responsible for assisting the executive director in all education activities of the IMMERSE center as well as communications, outreach, and development. They will also work with the center leadership on special projects such as new lab spaces, education programs, and other activities that further the mission of the center. This position is one of three newly created positions to build the IMMERSE team.

Duties & Responsibilities (Assistant Director)

Education and workforce development specific activities:
  • Make recommendations to center leadership regarding initiatives to increase and enhance educational learning and outreach efforts that foster a diverse, equitable, and inclusive environment.
  • Lead efforts with faculty and other key partners to consolidate expertise, knowledge, and experience in support of education and workforce development programs within the Center.
  • Plan, develop, facilitate, implement, evaluate, and administer a wide variety of educational programs.
  • Lead efforts to identify and develop grant proposals related to educational programs in collaboration with IMMERSE leadership.
  • Oversee and manage the deployment of research testbeds, content development, and assessment framework to provide next steps in immersive education space.
  • Lead reporting requirements related to education/outreach activities for the center.
General center responsibilities:
  • Advise IMMERSE leadership on the implementation of Center activities.
  • Oversee, manage, and actively participate in the day-to-day IMMERSE activities, including communications and website management, community engagement, project management, etc.
  • Develop, oversee, and lead seminars, workshops, symposiums, and sponsor visits.
Perform additional appropriate duties to further the mission of the center.

Minimum Qualifications (Assistant Director)
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, science, business administration, or related field
  • A total of four (4) years (48 months) of work experience in a higher education, research driven, or other relevant environment. (Note: Master's Degree in an area consistent with the duties of the position may be substituted for one (1) year of work experience.
Minimum Qualifications (Coordinator)
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, science, business administration, or related field.
  • A total of two (2) years (24 months) of work experience in a higher education, research driven, or other relevant environment. (Note: Master's Degree in an area consistent with the duties of the position may be substituted for one (1) year of work experience.)
Preferred Qualifications (Assistant Director)
  • Masters, PhD, or other advanced degree in computer science, computer engineering, immersive systems, or related field (additional years of relevant experience may serve in place of an advanced degree and vice versa).
  • Experience in curriculum and program development.
Preferred Qualifications (Coordinator)
  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline, such as computer science, computer engineering, immersive systems, or related field.
  • Experience in curriculum and program development.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (Assistant Director)
  • Strong proficiency in all forms of communication and ability to be a team player.
  • Demonstrated management experience involving a collaborative, multidisciplinary research team.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a variety of constituents while meeting multiple deadlines.
  • Strong organizational skills that reflect ability to perform and prioritize multiple tasks seamlessly with excellent attention to detail.
  • Proven analytical and project management skills.
  • Capacity to work independently and as part of a team.

Appointment Information

This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 5002 - Program Coordinator position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The minimum salary is $90,000 for the Assistant Director and $75,000 for the Coordinator, commensurate with experience and qualifications.
