The Department of Computer Science at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign is hiring an Assistant Director or Coordinator of Research for IMMERSE, the Center for Immersive Computing (https://immerse.illinois.edu). Immersive computing, including augmented/virtual/mixed/extended reality, digital twins, metaverse, and spatial computing, has the potential to transform most industries. IMMERSE brings together campus-wide expertise in immersive technologies, applications, and human factors to perform research, educate a new workforce, and build infrastructure that will accelerate a new era of immersive computing.

We seek motivated and dynamic applicants with strong communications skills who will help shape and execute the vision of this exciting new center. The Assistant Director of Research/Coordinator of Research is responsible for assisting the executive director in all research activities of the IMMERSE center as well as communications, outreach, and development. They will also work with the center leadership on special projects such as new lab spaces, education programs, and other activities that further the mission of the center. This position is one of three newly created positions to build the IMMERSE team.

Duties & Responsibilities (Assistant Director)

Research specific activities:
  • Develop and implement strategic planning for research under the guidance of IMMERSE leadership.
  • Identify and evaluate potential external funding opportunities, based on the mission of the Center, and support grant proposals in collaboration with IMMERSE leadership.
  • Facilitate relationships across the university and with external partners (universities, corporations, foundations, and government agencies) to form teams that pursue new funding opportunities.
  • Advise researchers in pursuing large cohesive research projects, through organizing teams of scientists and staff to prepare high-quality, compelling, competitive proposals for funding.
  • Interface with campus administration units (business offices, Grainger College of Engineering departments,
    Sponsored Programs Administration, the Office of Technology Management, and other key offices) to facilitate proposal submissions and grant administration.
  • Build on existing opportunities to enable research activities in immersive computing and support matchmaking and collaborations across faculty and researchers.
  • Oversee and manage the needs of IMMERSE research programs and projects and provide guidance of research compliance and integrity.
  • Identify, assess, and analyze data on research programs within the center.
  • Lead reporting requirements related to research activities for the center.
General center responsibilities:
  • Advise IMMERSE leadership on the implementation of Center activities.
  • Oversee, manage, and actively participate in the day-to-day IMMERSE activities, including communications and website management, community engagement, project management, etc.
  • Develop, oversee, and lead seminars, workshops, symposiums, and sponsor visits.
Perform additional appropriate duties to further the mission of the center.

Minimum Qualifications (Assistant Director)
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, science, business administration, or related field.
  • A total of four (4) years (48 months) of work experience in a higher education, research driven, or other relevant environment. (Note: Master's Degree in an area consistent with the duties of the position may be substituted for one (1) year of work experience.
Minimum Qualifications (Coordinator)
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, science, business administration, or related field.
  • A total of two (2) years (24 months) of work experience in a higher education, research driven, or other relevant environment. (Note: Master's Degree in an area consistent with the duties of the position may be substituted for one (1) year of work experience.)
Preferred Qualifications (Assistant Director)
  • Masters, PhD, or other advanced degree in computer science, computer engineering, immersive systems, or related field (additional years of relevant experience may serve in place of an advanced degree and vice versa).
  • Experience in research development.
  • Research Management Training/Certification (e.g. - University of Illinois Certified Research Administrator or similar)
Preferred Qualifications (Coordinator)
  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline, such as computer science, computer engineering, immersive systems, or related field.
  • Experience in research development.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (Assistant Director)
  • Strong proficiency in all forms of communication and ability to be a team player.
  • Demonstrated management experience involving a collaborative, multidisciplinary research team.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a variety of constituents while meeting multiple deadlines.
  • Strong organizational skills that reflect ability to perform and prioritize multiple tasks seamlessly with excellent attention to detail.
  • Proven analytical and project management skills.
  • Capacity to work independently and as part of a team.

Appointment Information

This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 5002 - Program Coordinator position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after posting close date. The minimum salary is $90,000 for the Assistant Director and $75,000 for the Coordinator, commensurate with experience and qualifications.
