Director of Strategy, Planning and Implementation

POSITION SUMMARY:

The College of Agricultural, Consumer, and Environmental Sciences (ACES) is seeking a dynamic, enthusiastically engaged, dedicated individual with exceptional interpersonal communication, organizational skills and work ethic to provide executive leadership within the Office of the Dean. This position serves as the day-to-day chief administrative and operations executive for the Office of the Dean. Reporting directly to the Dean, the Director of Strategy, Planning and Implementation will be accountable for a variety of strategic, administrative, operational and confidential matters with faculty, staff, students, alumni, senior university administrators, and government and community leaders. The incumbent will help develop, execute and sustain strategic priorities and initiatives for an integrated senior executive team.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

College-wide Strategic Initiatives
  • Accountable for working closely with the Dean and College leadership in the establishment and support of strategic initiatives in order to accomplish the organization's goals and objectives effectively.
  • Serves as a senior advisor and confidant to the Dean, aiding in high-level strategic and long-range planning, and monitoring baseline metrics of success often focusing on sensitive and confidential matters that involve risk.
  • Accountable for addressing and resolving issues that may have College-wide impact and risk in collaboration with College leadership.
  • Cultivates relationships as directed by the Dean that are necessary to move the strategic direction of the College forward.
  • Represents the Dean in administrative matters with appropriate campus and system level offices to advance the strategic mission of the college.
College-wide Planning and Implementation
  • Accountable for working closely with the Dean and College leadership to support the execution of strategic priorities, including providing execution oversite for strategic projects and programs on behalf of the Dean.
  • Accountable for representing the Dean with the ability to make commitments and finalize resolution in atypical circumstances with a variety of constituents (statewide, nationally and internationally).
  • Marshalls appropriate resources, develops and implements policy objectives, strategies and operating plans for various college-wide initiatives.
  • Accountable for directly supervising the staff for the Office of the Dean including the hiring, management, evaluation, and promotion of personnel. Counsels staff related to policy, rules and procedures involving discretion and judgement. Provides guidance and interpretation regarding the administration of other guiding principles and governance structures as they relate to the College and Campus.
  • Accountable for leading the Dean's office staff to execute operational priorities to include such things as committee coordination, college faculty meetings, five-year reviews of college leaders, the Report of Non-University Activities, annual training requirements, promotion and tenure process, sabbatical process, hiring and onboarding of new college leadership, recognition processes, inventory, space, etc.
  • At the request of the Dean, serves on special committees and supports strategic projects within the College, as well as broader university-wide initiatives.
  • Accountable for serving as the day-to-day chief administrative and operations executive for the Office of the Dean, providing guidance and work directives as needed including the developing of execution and assessment plans.
  • Provides leadership to staff concerning the development and implementation of a strategic management plan for the executive workflow of the Dean, including development of executive priorities and management of complex and evolving commitments and projects.
  • Accountable for working closely with others to develop/establish and implement policies that direct the administration of areas including planning, budgeting, financial management, human resource administration, advancement and any other areas as deemed necessary by the Dean, including regular involvement of programmatic projects as directed by the Dean.
  • Assumes additional strategic and other organizational duties to further the mission of the College as needed.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience

Required:
  • All candidates must hold a minimum of a bachelor's degree.
  • The position requires at least five years of experience at the University of Illinois with responsibility for administrative projects and processes. The candidate must have a proven ability to maintain confidentiality and ensure managerial discretion.
Preferred:
  • Preference will be given to candidates who have a master's degree.
  • Preference will be given to candidates who have more than five years of experience at the University of Illinois with responsibility for managing administrative projects and processes. Clear evidence of initiative and self-direction is preferred. Candidates who have experience or familiarity working with college-level or higher education executive leadership will receive preference.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • The candidate must have a proven ability to maintain confidentiality and ensure managerial discretion. Candidates should possess excellent analytical, project, and time management skills, including the ability to prioritize work and manage a variety of complex projects simultaneously with accuracy and detail in a complex environment with changing deadlines, priorities, and frequent interruptions. The candidate must have exceptional interpersonal skills, including tact, diplomacy, and effective conflict resolution skills. Candidates must have a demonstrated ability to communicate and collaborate with all levels of constituents and possess a strong work ethic and ability to see the big picture, attention to detail, and follow-through. The candidate must have exceptional communication skills including professional writing ability and verbal communication. The candidate must maintain exceptional poise under pressure at all times.
SALARY AND APPOINTMENT DETAILS:

This is a full-time (100%, 12 month) academic professional appointment. Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience, while also considering internal equity. The salary range for this position starts at $95,000. Sponsorship for work authorization is not available for this position.
