Risk Management

Job Summary
Administer and provide assistance with managing various commercial and self-insurance programs and related activities administered by the Office of Risk Management. Work is performed in a hybrid setting and is sedentary for the most part. No unusual physical exertion required.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Assist in the administration of the University's commercial property, casualty and self-insurance programs: collects underwriting information, completes applications including related follow-up activity, and reviews insurance policies to confirm their accuracy based on coverage(s) needed, and maintain policy database.
  • Verify, review, issue and manage medical professional insurance certificates; confirm credentials for medical personnel (e.g., employment history) and issue proof of insurance.
  • Assist with managing claim-processing activities of commercial policies including acting as administrative liaison to facilitate communications between commercial insurance claim representatives and campus units. Assist with directing settlement pay outs, by depositing commercial payments into claims settlement accounts if applicable, and disbursing payments to units through Banner journal vouchers.
  • Perform monthly reconciliation of financial statements for various accounts.
  • Process journal vouchers and billings as necessary to charge insurance premiums to the correct units.
  • Assist in the administration of insurance activities related to leased space including: reviewing leases to determine insurance requirements to obtain proper proof of insurance; tracking receipt of required proof of insurance; and maintaining the leased space database to ensure information is accurate and updated in a timely manner.
  • Serve as an in-house resource to handle insurance-related inquiries and ensure accurate information is provided in a timely manner to persons seeking assistance from the Office of Risk Management.
  • Apply cross-training knowledge and skills to provide effective back-up assistance in the absence of other Office of Risk Management officials/staff to ensure daily operational needs are met.
  • As requested represents Office of Risk Management with departments and insurer representatives to discuss insurance matters. Prepare and distribute meeting notes to appropriate persons regarding meeting discussions/outcomes.
  • Issue and review certificates of insurance to satisfy contractual obligations.
  • Perform other assigned duties appropriate for an Insurance Risk Manager I classification.
Minimum Qualifications

1. Any one or combination totaling three (3) years (36 months) from the categories below:

a. Coursework in insurance, risk management, or a closely related field, (such as business administration, finance, or accounting) as measured by the following conversion table or its proportional equivalent:

• 30 semester hours equals one (1) year (12 months)

• Associate's Degree (60 semester hours) equals eighteen months (18 months)

• 90 semester hours equals two (2) years (24 months)

• Bachelor's Degree (120 semester hours) equals three (3) years (36 months)

b. Professional insurance work experience.

2. Two (2) years (24 months) of professional insurance work experience.

3. One (1) year (12 months) of professional insurance experience which involved commercial property or casualty insurance work on an administrative level.

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications:
1. Minimum five years of commercial property or casualty insurance experience on an administrative level.
2. Minimum three years of experience administering commercial property and casualty insurance claims.

Preferred Certifications:
1. State of Illinois Producer's license specializing in property and casualty insurance (required within first 6 months of employment).

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • 1. Ability to interpret University policies/procedures and complex insurance-related documents.
  • 2. Ability to handle account-servicing activities that applies knowledge of accounting principles and practices.
  • 3. Excellent verbal and written communication skills to effectively communicate with University and departmental officials/staff, insurance representatives, and other internal/external persons seeking assistance from the Office of Risk Management.
  • 4. Strong interpersonal skills to provide high quality customer service that reflects positively upon the Office of Risk Management, and to develop/maintain professional work relationships with others.
  • 5. Ability to work independently and exercise good judgment and discretion in the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities.
  • 6. Organizational and multi-tasking skills to prioritize work accordingly to meet stringent deadlines and respond to urgent matters.
  • 7. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite programs/applications including Word, Excel, Access, Outlook, and PowerPoint. Computer skills in utilizing a web browser (e.g., Microsoft Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, or comparable web browser).
Appointment Information

This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 3706 - Insurance Risk Manager I position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after 5/15/2024. The minimum salary for this position is $50,000 and the salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications. System Office jobs such as this one are not eligible for the Referral Program.
