The Roy J. Carver Biotechnology Center (CBC) is one of the nation's leading core research facilities supporting discovery and innovation in the biomedical and life sciences. With a unique set of instrumentation and services supporting genomics, proteomics, metabolomics, bioinformatics, flow cytometry and translational medical research, the CBC team works with investigators at UIUC, across the nation, and around the world.

Job Summary
The CBC is seeking a Visiting Research Specialist to complement services on genome sequencing, gene expression and microbial profiling, and use of specialized laboratory equipment such as automated sample preparation equipment.

Duties & Responsibilities

Laboratory support:

• Prepare RNA and DNA samples for gene expression protocols, genome sequencing, metagenomic profiling, and nucleic acid quality checks.
• Develop, effectively use, and revise established laboratory protocols necessary to successfully construct libraries for sequencing with next-generation sequencing instrumentation.
• Collaborate with facility users on instrument loading, data interpretation, create experiment reports, and quality control summaries.

Administrative and other facility support:

• Maintain equipment, troubleshoot, and setup repair as needed.
• Maintain inventory of reagents as needed and perform other duties as assigned.
• Collaborate with other facility personnel with sample and library quality control and construction as needed.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
  • B.S. degree in life sciences, bioengineering or related field.
  • At least one year of hands on wet laboratory experience with competent multichannel pipetting skills and laboratory automation. This includes applicable laboratory research experience in small volume assays, PCR, handling nucleic acids and robotic automation.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with next generation sequencing library construction and/or sequencing techniques.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Effective communication, organizational, team, and personal relations skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform effectively in a professional demeanor in a diverse and fast-paced work environment consisting of changing priorities with attention to detail.
Appointment Information

This is a 100% full-time Academic Professional position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after 5/16/2024. Salary is commensurate with experience.
