The Department of Bioengineering in The Grainger College of Engineering seeks applicants for an Undergraduate Academic Adviser position. Reporting to the Associate Director of Undergraduate Programs and working as part of the Academic Programs unit in the Department of Bioengineering, the Undergraduate Academic Adviser provides academic advising and coordination of student services to holistically support the personal, academic, and professional development of bioengineering undergraduate students.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Advising

• Advise undergraduate students pursuing Bioengineering, Neural Engineering, and Computer Science + Bioengineering degrees on program requirements

• Interpret departmental, college, and university information, procedures, policies, and academic requirements

• Advocate on behalf of students that are experiencing personal difficulties and work in partnership with the Grainger College Engineering and other resources on campus to develop viable plans for completion

• Provide advice and assistance to incoming first year and transfer students during new student registration through in person and online advising in coordination with the Grainger College of Engineering

• Maintain schedule of academic advising appointments, serve as the primary adviser for students during drop-in advising at designated times throughout the academic year, adapting during high-peak times to meet student demand

• Record and maintain detailed records for all students; utilize DARS, Banner, UGradRecs, and other related systems

• Create a welcoming environment that is inclusive of students from diverse backgrounds

• Respond to queries from students, faculty, staff, and parents/families as appropriate (within the parameters of FERPA)

• Make referrals to appropriate campus and academic support resources, extracurricular activities, workshops and trainings, and other services within and outside of the college

Student Engagement and Outreach

• Facilitate and create relevant programming for undergraduates and assist with special events (senior design day, end of term appreciation events, welcome events, etc.)

• Host recruitment and yield events for prospective and admitted first-year and transfer students

• Visit with prospective and admitted students and their parents to discuss the undergraduate programs, student opportunities, and resources available for students in the Department of Bioengineering and the Grainger College of Engineering

• Attend Grainger Engineering events for prospective and admitted students and parents and represent Bioengineering in promoting the department's three bachelor's degree programs

• Assist with campus visit days for prospective and admitted students and parents, including a short presentation and Q&A session

• Travel occasionally for recruitment and programming purposes

Administrative

• Assume additional appropriate related undergraduate program duties to further the mission of the department

Minimum Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree

• 1 year of direct, full-time work experience in academic advising, career advising, or student coaching/mentoring. Two years of part-time experience may be substituted for 1 year of full-time work experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Master's degree in a related field (Higher Education, Social Sciences, Student Affairs)

• 3 years of direct, full-time work experience in academic advising, career advising, or student coaching/mentoring

• Experience working directly with undergraduate students in higher education

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Strong customer service skills and communication skills

• Strong work ethic with the motivation to help and guide others

• Ability to work collaboratively within a team setting

• Ability to learn and disseminate detailed information

• Ability to work an adjusted work schedule and/or work outside of the normal work hours

• Ability to travel occasionally for recruitment and programming purposes

APPOINTMENT INFORMATION

This is a full-time academic professional position appointed on a 12-month service basis. The anticipated start date is July 15, 2024, but is negotiable. Applicants may be interviewed before the closing date; however, no hiring decision will be made until after that date. The minimum starting salary is $48,000, commensurate with experience and qualifications. Employees hired into this position will be expected to work onsite on a full-time basis. Work authorization is not available for this position. This position may require occasional travel for recruitment and programming purposes.
