Sustainable Design Program Coordinator - College of Fine & Applied Arts

Job Summary
Provide advising and support to undergraduate students in the Bachelor of Science in Sustainable Design program in the College of Fine and Applied Arts. Serve as the primary academic advisor for students in the Bachelor of Science in Sustainable Design (BSSD), the three accelerated graduate pathway programs BSSD + Master of Urban Planning (MUP) 4+1 program, BSSD + Master of Fine Art (MFA) in Design for Responsible Innovation (DRI) 4+2 program and the BSSD + Master of Landscape Architecture (MLA) 4+2 program. Work closely with the Director of the Sustainable Design program and faculty in the College of Fine and Applied Arts partner programs which deliver the interdisciplinary curriculum for this college hosted program. The position will also contribute to stewardship of the program to troubleshoot problems and barriers to student success, serve as a professional development resource for students and support the administration of the program.

Duties & Responsibilities -
  • Undergraduate Student Advising
1. Serve as an advocate and resource for students in the Bachelor of Science in Sustainable Design (BSSD), and the three accelerated graduate pathway programs BSSD + MUP 4+1 program, BSSD + MFA in DRI 4+2 program, and the BSSD + MLA 4+2 program.
2. Advise current BSSD students on the fulfillment of degree requirements and other academic needs (to include review of undergraduate study abroad coursework; transfer student applications; prospective students to the major).
3. Maintain thorough record-keeping of all student contacts.
4. Advise incoming undergraduate first-year and transfer students during summer orientation and new student registration.
5. Work with the Director of the Sustainable Design program to monitor student progress and identify students in need of additional support or whose behaviors align with early alerts who require referral to other campus offices and resources.
6. Provide support, resources, and referrals for students on academic probation.
7. Maintain familiarity with college and university undergraduate program procedures and work with the BSSD Faculty Advisory Committee, Assistant and Associate Deans to ensure program policies are in compliance with those of the College and University.
8. Use social media and virtual technologies in communication and delivery of services to students.
9. Support the collection of student outcomes data for departmental evaluation, and Illini Success.
  • Undergraduate Recruitment and Outreach
1. Support BSSD student recruitment, including promoting programs at campus events and meetings (Majors and Minors Fair, recruitment, and yield events, etc.)
2. Coordinate departmental orientation and recruitment activities such as departmental check-in activities and welcome sessions.
3. Serve on the BSSD Faculty Advisory committee and provide necessary support, including retrieving and reviewing student data.
4. Assist with coordination of BSSD Ambassadors.
5. Consult with Director of the Sustainable Design program Design on review of intercollegiate transfers (ICTs).
  • Undergraduate Student Professional Development
1. Work collaboratively with Director of the Sustainable Design program to support students in developing career goals.
2. Work collaboratively with Director of the Sustainable Design program, and the College and University Career Services to develop, promote, manage, and evaluate career development programs and tools for career searches.
3. Serve as the co-administrator of the departmental Opportunities and Events newsletter.
4. Work collaboratively with Director of the Sustainable Design program to build and support connections with alumni, professionals, and employers, and leverage connections to foster professional development opportunities for students, internships, and employment opportunities.
5. Support international students through knowledge of CPT and OPT requirements, the H1B Visa Process, international employer recruiting activities, and international career management.
  • Other General Duties
1. Serve as College of Fine and Applied Arts Advisory Council liaison for Sustainable Design.
2. Participate in planning and execution of the Annual BSSD Convocation Ceremony.
3. Assist in the general administrative planning and resource allocation.
4. Participate in staff, committee, and other meetings as assigned.
5. Perform evening and weekend event support as requested.
6. Assist with meeting operational needs by performing other appropriate related duties.

Required Qualifications -
  • Bachelor's Degree
  • One year of experience in a sustainability field or programs in higher education (including as RA, TA, during graduate program)
Preferred Qualifications -
  • Master's degree in urban planning, Architecture, Design, Landscape Architecture, Environmental Sciences, Ecology, Sustainability, in higher education or related field.
  • Knowledge of the academic and professional disciplines of Urban Planning, Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Design, Sustainability, Ecology and/or Environmental Sciences.
  • University of Illinois advising experience; experience using Banner and DARS (or similar) student record systems
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities -
  • Employee must have a good working knowledge of academic program requirements and administrative procedures and rules necessary to administer the degree program.
  • With minimal supervision, this position sets daily work priorities, sets self-imposed deadlines, and acquires the necessary assistance in completing work in a timely manner.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities.
  • Must develop an in-depth knowledge of the requirements of the Bachelor of Science in Sustainable Design (BSSD), and the three accelerated graduate pathway programs BSSD + MUP 4+1 program, BSSD + MFA in DRI 4+2 program, and the BSSD + MLA 4+2 program.
  • Excellent organizational skills, initiative, and accuracy.
  • Exceptional Interpersonal skills.
Appointment Information

This is a 100% full-time Academic Professional position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the close of the search. Minimum salary for this position is $55k. We strive to provide a competitive salary, considering factors such as available market data, internal equity, candidate experience and qualifications, and budget constraints. The final salary offer will be determined after a thorough assessment of these elements.

Employees hired into this position will be expected to work on-site at the Urbana-Champaign campus on a full-time basis.
