Instructor/ Lecturer position in Imperial Chinese HistoryDepartment of East Asian Languages and Cultures

The Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures (EALC) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign invites applications for a L ecturer /Instructor posi tion in I mperial Chin ese H istory . The appointment will be a full-time, nine-month position in EALC with a teaching load of three courses in the Fall semester and three courses in the Spring semester. Reappointment may be possible based on departmental need, funding, and satisfactory performance review.
The successful candidate is expected to teach courses in East Asian and premodern Chinese history that are currently listed in Course Catalog (subject to approval by the department and after meeting minimum enrollment requirements ) . Additional duties include monitoring and mentoring teaching assistants, holding office hours to meet with students outside of class time, writing and grading examinations, and assigning grades. The scheduled start date of the appointment is August 16, 2024 . Salary i s commensurate with qualifications and experience.
G raduate-level tra ining in the study of Chinese history before 1900 is required . In addition, preference will be g iven to candidates with expertise in the history of Chinese intellectual history , science/technology/medicine , gender and sexuality, and race and empire . Applicants m ust also demonstrate a strong record and teaching experience in courses in Chinese and East Asian history .
To be hired at the rank of L ecturer, the job c andidate must have a Ph.D. in History, East Asian Studies, or related field by the start of the appointment and evidence of successful teaching experience . Candidates with a Master's degree in History, East Asian Studies, or related field or who are ABD and present evidence of successful teaching will be hired at the rank of I nstructor.
