Job Purpose:

Supervise a small group of skilled hourly employees engaged in technical support activities such as locomotive and engine testing and maintenance. Work duties are somewhat complex and follow established procedures, standards and specifications. Some direct guidance is received from engineers. Responsible for completion of job requests and efficient use of labor, material and equipment. Work is performed more or less independently, with volume of work serving as a check on productivity.

Education / Training:

Required:

- BSE, BS in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or equivalent work experience.

Preferred:

- Advance college degree with major in Engineering.

Key Job Elements:

Supervise a select group of skill trades staff and manage key engineering projects:

- Participates in the selection of new employees;

- Trains, develops, assigns work to and evaluates employees;

- Plans and meets quality and schedule requirements;

- Analyzes job requests and determines procedures to be followed in shop;

- Coordinates activities with related departments;

- Informs engineers and manager of developments;

- Complies with terms of local labor agreement;

- Performs the following administrative functions; Daily time keeping, safety message, job assignments, vacation, training, OT equalization, Grievance’s resolution, & workload prioritization;

- Communicates test plans, test results and roadblocks back to Engineering and resolves technical issue with the assigned engineer;

- Ensure that a safe and productive workplace by completing safety audits, coordinating facility repairs, and eliminating unsafe work practices;

- Maintain a safe and productive work environment for employees;

- Drive a culture that complies with our values and actions, Integrity, Commitment, Excellence, and Teamwork:

- Participates in resolution of engineering related project problems;

- Investigate & resolve facility equipment failures;

- Provides technical direction to support personnel;

- Develop and document processes to reduce test variation and improve testing efficiency;

- Support flexible work time schedules.

- Frequent contact with others outside the workgroup;

- Additional responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications and Experience:

Required:

- Four years of equivalent work experience would include working on or with large mechanical and or electrical systems coupled with exposure to union work environment;

- Proficient with computer applications: MS Excel, Project, Word, Power Point etc.;

- Analytical ability where problems are unusual and difficult;

- Good oral and written communications skills;

- Well-developed interpersonal skills to work effectively with others.

Preferred:

- Understanding of six sigma;

- Understanding Diesel engine principles;

- Understanding of locomotive systems;

- Understanding of Federally mandated emission.

Essential and Physical Activities Functions

- Strength – Position typically involves oversight in an industrial environment. Frequent standing, sitting, and walking. Occasional light to medium-level lifting (up to 30 pounds);

- Motion – Position regularly requires standard motions associated with leading and demonstrating in an industrial environment. Frequent reaching, handling, grasping, carrying, pulling. Occasional stooping, kneeling, crouching;

- Vision/Hearing Requirements – Constant verbal communications, including both talking and hearing;

- Work Environment – Position is Safety Sensitive and will require the use of Personal Protective Equipment. Position may involve work in a non-temperature-controlled environment. Position is located in an industrial environment, including occasional exposure to noise (85+ decibels), occasional exposure to temperature changes and/or extreme temperatures, heavy machinery, hazardous materials, and other hazardous working conditions;

- Emotional Demands – High level of responsibility in a hazardous environment. Must be able to lead a diverse team in a production environment. Requires interpersonal skills while sustaining very high standards;

- Safety – Position is Safety Sensitive and will require the use of Personal Protective Equipment.
