Position Summary, Requirements, and Qualifications


Overview
The Upward Bound (UB) Program, in existence at Northern Illinois University (NIU) since 1966, serves 120 high school students from Aurora and Rockford. To participate in the program participants must come from either low-income families or have parents who have not completed a bachelor's degree. The program offers instruction in English, mathematics, science and foreign language; tutoring, academic and cultural enrichment activities, career exploration, financial aid advisement and support services designed to assist students as they prepare for entry into and ultimately graduate from college. The NIU Upward Bound Program includes a six week residential summer session and a twenty-six week academic year session. The guiding mission of the Upward Bound Program is to provide motivation and instruction necessary for post-secondary education.
Position Summary
The Coordinator recruits middle and high school students, screens and evaluates new student applicants, and implements academic year off campus class instruction, tutoring, and counseling sessions. The Program Coordinator has primary responsibility for scheduling and conducting field trips for educational and cultural activities, arranging transportation for students in the summer program, and conducting academic counseling sessions.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Assumes major role in the identification, recruitment, selection, and orientation of students.
Conducts exit interviews with all graduates and students who leave the program prior to graduation; and writes final summary reports for all students.
Assists with the preparation of the annual performance report.
Coordinates After-school and Summer Program Activities
Assumes primary responsibility for the development and compilation of relevant student performance data and statistics for the purposes of student placement as well as for use in proposal and report development.
Assumes primary responsibility for the placement of students in classes, matching students with tutors and mentors, and referrals to special assistance personnel. Responsible for the specific design, development, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of the Academic Guidance, Personal Counseling, Career Planning, and College Placement program components, particularly the Bridge/Transition components in both the residential summer and the academic year sessions.
Assists in the design and monitoring of the academic curriculum.
Conducts the orientation and training for summer residential staff.
Assist in the supervision of summer residential staff, tutors, and the academic year and summer session instructors.
Provides students with academic guidance, pre-college selection, transition preparation, college placement, financial aid assistance, alumni follow-up, and related activities.
Conducts appropriate workshops for parents.
Conducts the program's alumni follow-up and monitoring component; maintains contact with colleges and universities where students have been placed; and compiles appropriate reports and studies regarding program alumni.
Assumes key share of responsibility for the overall administration of the Upward Bound Program, and performs other duties as required by the Executive Director.
