Job Description

DUTIES:  Contact Placing Insurance Brokers in London and conduct other investigation and discovery to obtain policy documents and slips evidencing that policies were issued and subscribed by London Market Insurers. Review multiple policies spanning several years and levels of coverage and prepare policy summaries and coverage charts. Identify which policies potentially apply to tendered claims, determine how limits and underlying insurance / deductibles apply, determine legal defenses applicable to coverage based on exclusions and conditions. Draft reports to insurer clients and communicate with insurer clients about claim facts, policy coverage, legal liability analysis, and coverage analysis and provide reserve recommendations, coverage position recommendations, settlement recommendations and litigation strategies. Draft coverage letters responding to claim tenders and reserving rights and, if applicable, assist with retention of defense counsel. Manage paralegals in their conduct of document discovery review and oversee summaries and analysis of same in reports and excel spreadsheets for partner and client use. Manage assistant in file opening and file maintenance matters and with billing of experts, mediators, and court reporters. Provide input into paralegal performance reviews, work assignments and scope of duties. Draft pleadings, briefs, and other litigation related documents. Prepare and respond to written discovery. Attend and represent clients at court conferences and hearings, either in person or by video, as directed by the Judge, and report on same to partner and clients. Represent clients at mediations and settlement conferences and assist with settlement of claims, lawsuits, and coverage disputes.  Must appear in office approximately two days per week; work from home permitted three days per week.   

 

Requirements: Juris Doctor degree or foreign degree equivalent in Law and 2 (two) years of insurance coverage Associate experience or in the job offered or related role.

 

Experience and/or education must include:

 

  1. Barred in the State of Illinois;
  2. Knowledge of insurer duties responding to claim tenders, defense tenders, and settlement   demands;
  3. Experience handling and litigating claims coverage required in Illinois, New York, New Jersey and California;
  4. Knowledge of bad faith law and exposures, particularly Illinois, New York, New Jersey, and California;
  5. Application and interpretation of the Federal Court Rules and Procedures, including bankruptcy law;
  6. Create pivot tables and allocate liability utilizing Excel; Discovery document databases including Westlaw/LexisNexis, and ECF;
  7. Insurance claims involving mass torts, injury, general liability, municipal, school, and religious institution liability;
  8. Work with specialty policies, including the London Market, self-insured programs and risk pools, and reinsurance;
  9. Court appearances and document filings in state and federal courts, including federal bankruptcy court in Illinois, New York, New Jersey and California; and
  10. Hands-on experience representing insurers at mediations and settlement conferences.

 

OTHER: Job Site: 55 West Monroe Street, Suite 3000, Chicago, IL 60603 – Must appear in office approximately two days per week, work from home permitted three days per week; 40 hours/week; $180,000 /yr - $220,000 /yr.
