POSITION: University Archivist
UNIT: McCormick Library of Special Collections and University Archives
REPORTS TO: Director, McCormick Library of Special Collections & University Archives

Summary
Northwestern University Libraries seek a dynamic, creative, and collaborative candidate for University Archivist. As a highly visible representative of the University Archives, Northwestern Libraries, and the University overall, the University Archivist will build on a rich archival record of Northwestern's history and engage actively with faculty, students, alumni, and others from across the campus and wider Northwestern community locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally. As part of a coordinated succession plan to ensure continuity in expertise, services, and strategy, the University Archivist will begin by working closely with the recently appointed University Historian to gain familiarity with collections, provide specialized research service, collaborate on operational matters, contribute to outreach activities, assist in donor relations, and participate in the full range of University Archives activities and functions.
Positioned organizationally in the Charles Deering McCormick Library of Special Collections and University Archives, the University Archivist works in a team environment with other curators, librarians, and specialized staff to support research, teaching, and learning at Northwestern and a global clientele of scholars, alumni, cultural institutions, and others whose work draws on Northwestern's distinctive holdings. The University Archivist's direct role ultimately will entail coordinating all aspects of University Archives, including acquiring and managing collections, providing in-depth research assistance and teaching, engaging in public events that highlight University Archives and Northwestern history, and cultivating relationships with alumni, donors, and others to advance these efforts. The University Archivist also is a key point of contact for University administration, including the Office of the President, Alumni Relations and Development, and Athletics, providing information and contributing often to wider alumni- and donor-relations efforts.
While documenting Northwestern's past and present are central responsibilities, the University Archivist also will have a vital role in shaping the future of University Archives and Northwestern Libraries by pursuing new digital strategies for archival material acquisition, delivery, display, preservation and studies.
These opportunities reflect a new vision and priorities for Northwestern Libraries led by our new Dean to activate the Libraries' historical strengths in ways that support and accelerate emerging methods in research, discovery, preservation, and engagement.
