Wieland is hiring a Battalion Chief. The Battalion Chief will be responsible for planning, organizing, directing, coordinating, and supervising activities of the Fire Department which includes the leadership and management of team, directing fire prevention and training activities, and providing oversight of all major programs and initiatives. . This role is located in East Alton, IL and will be fully on-site.

 


Responsibilities

 

Battalion Chief Responsibilities:
Assume the responsibilities of the Fire Chief during their absence.
Interviewing, hiring, orientation, and training of new firefighters.
Evaluate and provide recommendations for the firefighting team in an effort to drive continuous improvement.
Assist in the development and implementation of goals, objectives, policies, and procedures.
Coordinate Firefighter and Captain training and testing as required by local, state and federal requirements.
Regulate all scheduling and deployment of the firefighter staff.
Regulate, review, and approve payroll entries for firefighters, supervising all vacations, time off, etc.
Follow-up on any incident reports as needed.
Audit, identify, and report any deficiencies, equipment needs, vehicle maintenance, etc. to the Fire Chief.
Coordinate staffing needs in conjunction with the Fire Chief to ensure the Wieland Fire Department is adequately staffed.
Assist in providing instruction to plant employees regarding fire safety, confined space entry, gas meters, CPR/AED, and first aid.
Participate in ongoing training and professional development to stay updated on firefighting techniques, equipment, and safety protocols.
Work collaboratively with other emergency response teams.
Perform duties with a high level of integrity, responsibility, and commitment to safety.
Battalion Chief Qualifications:
High School Diploma or equivalent.
A two (2) year college or university degree is preferred but not required.
Must currently or previously have held the rank of Fire Captain or higher for a minimum of 3 years.
Minimum of 8 years of consecutive experience in fire service required.
Firefighter Certification from at least one of the following:
Illinois State Fire Marshal - Firefighter II, or
Illinois State Fire Marshal - Basic Firefighter Operations, or
IFSAC/Pro-Board Certification - Industrial Firefighter
Valid Driver's License (Class B) with a clean driving record.
EMT/EMR License through the Illinois Department of Public Health.
CPR/AED credentials as required for the EMT/EMR license.
HAZMAT (HAZWOPER) Training & Certification
24-Hours - New hires
8-Hours - Annually
Respiratory Protection Training & Certification - New hires/annually/fit test
Confined Space/Rope Rescue - New hires/annually
Successful completion of an annual comprehensive medical evaluation and physical examination which includes cardiac stress testing.
Strong verbal and written communication skills
