Illinois Fire Service Institute (IFSI) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) seeks enthusiastic and self-motivated Analytical Chemist who will be responsible for providing support to the IFSI Research program on health and safety of first responders, specifically as related to the analysis of various biological matrices, and the biomonitoring of human samples.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Develop new analytical methods and perform required validations.
  • Use range of techniques to carry out analysis using multiple mass spectrometry platforms (HPLC, LC-MS, GC-MS, ICP-MS).
  • Run mass spectrometry platform software and analyze biomonitoring data.
  • Ensure routing operation and maintenance of multiple mass spectrometry and liquid chromatography platforms and analytical instruments.
  • Seek Federal and State funding, write grant proposals to acquire funding for research projects.
  • Ensure completion of research project management deliverables, determine project milestones, develop progress reports and investigational applications.
  • Assist in preparing and developing project performance progress reports for research activities as required by campus offices and funding agencies.
  • Compile and summarize project outcomes to be used in presentations at scientific conferences and Fire Service Organizations.
  • Facilitate operations for human subject research candidate recruitment, collect and process biological samples, and related activities.
  • Manage day-to-day research lab activities, and perform other duties as required.
  • Participate in academic and community events as an IFSI representative.
Minimum Qualifications:
  1. Ph.D., in Toxicology, Analytical Chemistry or related disciplines.
  2. 2-3 years of postdoctoral research experience relevant to analysis of organic reactions/products, and medical chemistry concepts.
  3. Proven record(s) of analytical method development and validation on multiple mass spectrometry platforms (HPLC, LC-MS, GC-MS, ICP-MS).
  4. Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  5. Proficiency in project management, including budgeting, planning, execution, delivery, quality assurance, and reporting.
  6. Enthusiastic, motivated, and proactive, problem solver with superb planning, organizational, and coordinating skills.
  7. Experience working with the University administration, particularly IRB, IBC and/or IACUC (or similar programs at other institutions).
  8. Familiar with computer software typically used in scientific research and dissemination (such as Office suite, Box, Google Docs).
  9. Demonstrated record of performance, positive attitude, and ability to work well with others.

Preferred Qualifications:
  1. Experience working with firefighters and/or familiar with firefighters' exposure.
  2. Experienced in project management and leadership skills.
  3. Knowledgeable in general laboratory operations, inventory management, and acquisition of new equipment for expansion of IFSI research programs.
  4. Experience working with tools such as SPSS, Qualtrics, REDCap, Github, Python


Appointment Information

This is a 100% full-time Academic Professional position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after July 16, 2024. The starting salary for this role is $75,000. The final salary will be determined by a thorough assessment of internal salary equity, candidate experience and qualifications.
