About the Position: This is a Metal Forger, WG-3802-10, position with the Rock Island Arsenal Joint Manufacturing and Technology Center (RIA-JMTC), Special Processes Division, Forge Branch out of Rock Island, Illinois. Responsibilities Set up and operate upset forging machines. Set up and operate 1,000 pounds to 12,000-pound steam, pneumatic, and hydraulic hammers. Program preheat furnaces to required temperatures. Forge a variety of metal parts from ferrous and non-ferrous materials. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications Who May Apply: US Citizens Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision. Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Metal Forger~ without more than normal supervision. I have the ability to perform common Metal Forger tasks. I can read drawings/blueprints; set up hammers under close guidance; set the controllers for furnaces; and blowing scale and lubricant. I work under supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who reviews my work for completion. – Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision Ability to Interpret Instructions, Specification, etc. (includes blueprint reading) Ability to Use Hand Tools, Power Tools, etc., for Metal Work Dexterity (Assembly Disassembly Reassembly etc) Knowledge of Equipment, Structure, Materials, etc. (includes constructing repair, and forging) Layout and Pattern Development (includes Geometric Projection and Triangulation) PHYSICAL EFFORTS: Work assignments involve standing, walking, stooping, bending, and kneeling and may be done in awkward positions. Continually handles objects weighing from 20 to 50 pounds and occasionally objects weighing up to 100 pounds. WORKING CONDITIONS: Works in area of heat treat furnaces where temperatures may be above average. Is constantly exposed to the possibility of severe burns due to abnormally higher temperatures reached by metals from forging and being heated in furnaces. Work is in dirty area where the noise constantly reaches a level which is difficult to talk over. Wears a variety of Personal Protective Equipment to ensure safety. Education Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone – no substitution of education for experience is permitted. Additional Information Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Registration. You will be required to provide proof of U.S. Citizenship. One year trial/probationary period may be required. Direct Deposit of Pay is required. Selection is subject to restrictions resulting from Department of Defense referral system for displaced employees. This is a(n) Logistics Career Field position. Multiple positions may be filled from this announcement. Salary includes applicable locality pay or Local Market Supplement. Payment of Permanent Change of Station (PCS) costs is not authorized, based on a determination that a PCS move is not in the Government interest. This position is a TERM Not to Exceed 13 months position. It is time limited and may be extended up to a maximum of eight years. To be eligible for conversion, employee must complete at least 2 years of current continuous service under a term appointment in the competitive service AND employee must have a current performance rating under such term appointment of at least fully successful or equivalent.
