TRAFFIC CONTROL AIDE – SALARIED
OFFICE OF EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT AND COMMUNICATIONS
(Midway & O’Hare Airports)
Number of positions: Up to 7 (Additional vacancies possible pending budget approval)
Starting Salary: $40,392.00
Successful candidates must pass a drug screen and a background investigation. Persons offered employment must pass all pre-employment exams prior to appointment.
These positions are only open to current city employees covered under the terms of the City’s collective bargaining agreement with THE PUBLIC SAFETY EMPLOYEES’ UNION – S.E.I.U., LOCAL 73 AND I.B.E.W. LOCAL 21 (BARGAINING UNIT 02) .

Under general supervision, controls the flow of pedestrian and vehicular traffic at assigned intersections and traffic areas leading into and out of special events, and performs related duties as required.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
+ Directs and controls the flow of traffic to ensure the safety of pedestrians crossing at intersections
+ Performs special traffic control assignments at parades and special events to assist in crowd control and to ensure the safe crossing of pedestrians and efficient vehicle flow
+ Issues traffic citations for violations of the City’s traffic laws
+ Prepares reports to document accidents or atypical incidents occurring during assigned shift
+ Assists disabled and elderly pedestrians across intersections as required
+ Answers inquiries and gives geographic directions to the public
+ Sets up and retrieves traffic cones and barricades for traffic and crowd control
NOTE: Additional duties may be required for this position.
LOCATION: Office of Emergency Management and Communications
WORK SITES: Midway International Airport & O’Hare International Airport
DAYS OFF: Rotating
SHIFTS: 1430 – 2230 hours and 1500 -2300 hours
- Some airports may require overnight hours*

Qualifications:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
+ Willingness and ability to perform the duties of the job
+ A valid State of Illinois driver’s license is required
+ Must be at least 19 years of age at the closing date of application
+ Successful completion of a job training program is required after hire
NOTE: At the time of HIRE, candidates selected for hire MUST show proof that they possess a VALID STATE OF ILLINOIS Driver’s License .
NOTE: Proof of age (e.g., current Driver’s License, State ID, Passport, etc.) must be submitted at the time of processing.
IMPORTANT NOTE: A Traffic Control Aide must be available to work anywhere in the City of Chicago and anytime events are scheduled.
SELECTION REQUIREMENTS
This position is willing and able. Bidders, who successfully apply and affirmatively answer the willingness and ability questionnaire, will be hired in seniority order according to the collective bargaining agreement.
