Job Description

The Program Support Specialist of Academic Services, within University College provides individual and programmatic support to students during their initial academic transition and continued enrollment at Illinois State University. This position is responsible for developing and delivering programs including, but not limited to STEM Alliance (comprehensive campus program with the purpose of increasing recruitment, retention, and graduation rates of underrepresented students in STEM fields), and MASAI (Mentoring, Academics, Scholarship, and Academic Initiative) mentor program (mentoring program that pairs first-year students of color with upperclassmen) that aid in the persistence and graduation of diverse students. The coordinator also serves as the secondary point of contact for the SOAR (Supporting Opportunity, Actualization, and Realization) Scholar Academy. These communities are structured to support underrepresented students and students of color at Illinois State University. In coordination with other campus offices, the position serves as a primary liaison, mentor, and consultant for students during their educational development, career planning, and personal growth. A successful candidate has awareness and advocacy for equitable academic services and resources and can build productive campus and community partnerships. This position works under the guidance of the Assistant Director of Academic Services in University College to collaborate with many stakeholders across campus, community members, family members and support individuals. The incumbent works closely with university faculty, staff, administrators, as well as community leaders and professionals. This position supervises graduate assistants and student employees.
