Technology Services at Illinois is seeking applicants for an Endpoint Services Specialist or Senior Endpoint Services Specialist position. We are looking for detail-oriented candidates that can support, configure, and design our endpoint management systems, including our upcoming transition from Microsoft Configuration Manager to Microsoft Intune. Our systems support both administrative and educational endpoints across campus. In this role, you will collaborate extensively across the organization, working with team members, other campus units, and vendors to support on-premises and vendor-hosted systems and services. Responsibilities include technical support, troubleshooting, documentation creation, customer interaction, ensuring security compliance, and planning for future upgrades and roadmaps. The ideal candidate thrives working in a collaborative environment, providing excellent customer service, and continually learning new technologies. Fully remote or hybrid work may be possible for this position per the University's Workplace Flexibility policy. Sponsorship for work authorization is not available for this position.

Job Summary

Play a significant role in creating, deploying, and maintaining production level campus IT services that are robust, high quality, and reliable, meeting the needs of Technology Services customers in relation to the Endpoint Services effort. Endpoint Services includes support for products and systems that allow for the remote and automated deployment to an endpoint such as operating systems, patches, updates, drivers, security items and applications to desktop, laptop, and mobile devices. It can include support of device lifecycle events including procurement, inventory, disposal, as well.

Duties & Responsibilities

Technical & Operational (Day to Day)
  • In coordination with Endpoint Services team: manage, support, administer, and maintain SaaS solutions, servers, and tools that allow for remote and automated deployment of operating systems, patches, updates, drivers and security items to thousands of desktops, laptops, and mobile devices across the entire university
    system.
  • Create, update, test, research and deprecate shared content.
  • Create and maintain automated solutions to provide efficiencies for the service.
  • Work with unit IT Professionals to meet their needs of the service.
  • Implement and respond to monitoring alerts for the service.
  • Participate in Change Management and Incident Management.
  • Assist with product evaluations, and communicate with vendors, or other third parties, to maintain best practices for their products and troubleshoot issues.
  • Implement appropriate components to support security policies and procedures.
  • Participate in supporting the full life cycle of an endpoint from procurement and inventory, to setup and reporting, through proper disposal.
  • Senior level only: Manage, support, administer, and maintain SaaS solutions, servers, and tools that allow for remote and automated deployment of operating systems, patches, updates, drivers and security items to thousands of desktops, laptops, and mobile devices across the entire university system.
  • Senior level only: Conduct product evaluations, and communicate with vendors, or other third parties, to maintain best practices for their products and troubleshoot issues.
  • Senior level only: Recognize the need for, and implement, appropriate components to support security policies and procedures.
Support campus wide Endpoint Services of large scale: with greater than 20,000 end users, high risk, or complex infrastructure.
  • In coordination with the Endpoint Services team: assist others to maintain and plan for evolution of services.
  • Assist with business plans, conduct product reviews, and with architecting and implementing newly purchased or existing applications.
  • Assist in the planning for disaster recovery and business continuity as deemed appropriate for the service.
  • Participate in IT service projects of defined scope with shifting priorities and schedules.
  • Apply interoperability standards and best practices as adopted by the organization.
  • Contribute to, and perform, quality assurance procedures, as necessary.
  • Participate in training across all endpoint services offerings and tools.
  • Assume additional related responsibilities to enhance the mission of the organization as assigned.
  • Participate in shared governance around policies, procedures, and major changes.
  • Senior level only: Create business plans, conduct product reviews, and assist with architecting and implementing newly purchased or existing applications.
  • Senior level only: Plan for disaster recovery and business continuity as deemed appropriate for the service.
  • Senior level only: Manage IT service projects of defined scope with shifting priorities and schedules.
  • Senior level only: Mentor and train backup and other staff as necessary.
Ensure excellent Customer Service throughout Technology Services
  • Act as an advocate for customers of the service.
  • Communicate to stakeholders about service offerings and issues.
  • Provide training for unit IT Professionals, help desk staff and others on the use of the system. As well as training to other team members on running the service.
  • Apply and contribute to the creation and maintenance of service-based documentation.
  • Resolve customer issues.
Endpoint Services Specialist Minimum Qualifications
  1. High school diploma or equivalent.
  2. Any one or any combination totaling two (2) years (24 months) from the following categories:
    1. College coursework which includes Information Technology (IT), IT Management, Programming, IT systems, or a closely related discipline, as measured by the following conversion table or its proportional equivalent:
      1. 30 semester hours equals one (1) year (12 months)
      2. Associate's Degree (60 semester hours) equals eighteen months (18 months)
      3. 90 semester hours equals two (2) years (24 months)
      4. Bachelor's Degree (120 semester hours) equals three (3) years (36 months)
    2. Work experience in IT-related functions, such as hardware/software support, programming, network design, network engineering, IT systems integration, or closely related fields.

Senior Endpoint Services Specialist Minimum Qualifications

  1. High school diploma or equivalent.
  2. Any one or any combination totaling four (4) years from the following categories:
    1. College coursework which includes Information Technology (IT), IT Management, Programming, IT systems, or a closely related discipline, as measured by the following conversion table or its proportional equivalent:
      1. 30 semester hours equals one (1) year (12 months)
      2. Associate's Degree (60 semester hours) equals eighteen months (18 months)
      3. 90 semester hours equals two (2) years (24 months)
      4. Bachelor's Degree (120 semester hours) equals three (3) years (36 months)
    2. Work experience in IT-related functions, such as hardware/software support, programming, network design, network engineering, IT systems integration, or closely related field.
  3. Demonstrated experience with endpoint management and deployment tools used in conjunction with Windows, macOS or mobile devices - such as Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager (MECM / MEM), Microsoft Intune, Jamf Pro, Munki, or Workspace ONE.

Preferred Qualifications
  1. Bachelor's degree.
  2. Demonstrated experience with Windows or macOS desktop operating systems.
  3. Experience with endpoint management and deployment tools used in conjunction with Windows, macOS or mobile devices - such as Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager (MECM / MEM), Microsoft Intune, Jamf Pro, Munki, or Workspace ONE.
  4. Experience with Microsoft Active Directory or Microsoft Entra ID.
  5. Demonstrated experience with foundational networking technologies such as DHCP, DNS, PXE, Netboot, multicast.
  6. Basic experience and knowledge with management of projects.
  7. Programming experience in at least one relevant language such as PowerShell, Bash, Z shell, Python, Azure CLI, Azure Cloud Shell.
  8. Experience using REST APIs.
  9. Experience with SQL, WQL and/or SSRS.
  10. Experience with packaging applications for use in an endpoint management system.
  11. Demonstrated willingness to learn and is self-motivated.
  12. Senior level only: Experience with leadership concepts, such as coaching, mentoring, and delegation.
  13. Senior level only: Experience with AngularJS and/or CSS.
  14. Senior level only: Experience leading a team of IT professionals.
  15. Senior level only: Experience in participating in diverse workgroups.
  16. Senior level only: Relevant and recent training and certification for Endpoint Management Systems.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Demonstrated desktop administration skill with Windows or macOS operating systems. Demonstrated understanding of foundational network technologies such as DHCP, DNS, PXE, Netboot, multicast. Demonstrated ability in effective communication and collaborating in a high-performance team environment. Demonstrated commitment to customer service. Ability to diagnose and troubleshoot issues with an Endpoint Services product as well as client interactions with the Endpoint Services product. Demonstrated ability in developing scripts to automate processes. Knowledge of IT environments in university settings. Demonstrated knowledge of accessibility and usability standards. Demonstrated willingness to learn and is self-motivated. Ability to create and maintain appropriate service management documentation.

Appointment Information

This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 5031 - Information Technology Technical Associate position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the closing date. The salary range starts at $68,000.00 for Endpoint Services Specialist and at $77,000.00 for Senior Endpoint Services Specialist. Salary is commensurate with experience. Sponsorship for work authorization is not available for this position.
