We are seeking highly motivated individuals for a visiting research specialist position to be part of cancer biology and metastasis research in the Laboratory of Ekrem Emrah Er, PhD at the Department of Physiology and Biophysics at University of Illinois at Chicago. We focus on understanding how mechanical and physical signal transduction within the tumor microenvironment regulates outgrowth of lethal metastases in humans. We use an interdisciplinary approach that involves patient material, mouse models, organotropic ex vivo and in vitro models and bioinformatics (Tello-Lafoz et al., 2021, Immunity and Er et al., 2018, Nature Cell Biology).

The candidate will be in a highly dynamic and intellectually stimulating research environment with possibilities of participating in inter- and intra- institutional collaborations. This a highly versatile position that will help individuals gain transferable skills for continued and future careers in science and industry.

Duties & Responsibilities

Conduct molecular and cellular experiments in a laboratory studying how mechanical and physical signal transduction within the tumor microenvironment regulates outgrowth of lethal metastases in humans
Collaborate with the Principal Investigator (PI) and other researchers to design and process samples from mouse models of cancer metastasis
Test, optimize and implement both new and existing methods, procedures and techniques.
Develop and optimize comprehensive laboratory protocols while maintaining accurate records of the work performed.
Able to supervise and train other lab members in specialized tasks.
Assist the PI in generating data and figures for grant applications and manuscripts.
Aid in the preparation and implementation of general laboratory maintenance protocols (e.g. safety, training, waste management, animal); assist with ordering lab supplies and maintaining laboratory stock and inventories.
Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in biology, biomedicine or related field required. Master's degree in science preferred.
A minimum of 3 years related research experience.
Possesses and applies comprehensive knowledge of research principles, concepts, practices and methods.
Proficient in specific lab research techniques.
Experience in one or more of the following fields is considered favorable: molecular biology, biochemistry, bioinformatics, mouse genetics, pathology
Recent graduates with post-baccalaureate scientific training and/or work experience in cancer biology and cell biology are encouraged to apply.
