Strategic Spending Business Analyst

Strategic Spending and Productivity is focused on helping optimize Northern's Trust's Technology investments. The team partners with Technology leadership to optimize the Technology workforce, identify and monitor productivity initiatives and associated savings, manages third party vendor risk, and helps manage the firm's software assets.

The Strategic Spending Business Analyst will develop and maintain reporting that helps to identify opportunities across GTS related to workforce (employees, contingent labor, and other contractors), hardware and software purchases, hardware and software license optimization. The Strategic Spending Business Analyst also participates in the lifecycle of software entitlements management including active license tracking and financial baseline and forecasting of software products.

The key responsibilities of the role include:

  • Work with Strategic Spend and key technology partners to identify opportunities and create a suite of reporting to influence and corroborate strategic change efforts, including, but not limited to, labor-related analysis, vendor analysis, productivity, capital expenditures, technology assets, and license utilization.
  • Develop and maintain reporting leveraging Power BI, Incorta, Flexera, Excel and Powerpoint
  • Establish regular cadence (monthly/quarterly) to provide reporting to management and stakeholders
  • Engage with Entitlements Analysts to understand stakeholder software demand


Other duties include:

  • Liaising with partners and peers throughout the organization
  • Planning work in conjunction with IT and business priorities
  • Assisting with ad hoc analysis


The successful candidate will have demonstrated experience with the following:

  • Business analysis and use of appropriate tools - including strong capabilities in Excel and Power BI, as well as foundational knowledge of basic SQL joins, data schemas, and other tenants of analysis
  • Financial acumen - including basic accounting and understanding of accruals
  • Excellent communication skills - verbal, written and presentational
  • Experience in Procurement and/or Finance organizations partnering with Technology and business software product owners/stakeholders is a plus
  • Software demand and lifecycle management and use of Flexera for commercial software products is a plus
