The Opportunity

Our Diagnostics business currently has an opportunity for the role of Sr. Scientist II for our Abbott Park , IL location. The primary function of this position is to initiate and may direct small to medium scale projects. Conducts pre-clinical and/or other technical assay design research including design verification with minimal versight/supervision and may provide technical review, oversight and feedback to others. May present scientific observations to management levels with Abbott.

What You’ll Work On

+ With minimal guidance, designs, develops, and completes experiments, accomplishes established milestones and summarizes data, interprets results and draws conclusions.

+ Evaluates data using analytical methodologies to achieve results. Applies advanced scientific knowledge to projects. Recommends options for future experiments leveraging patents and scientific literature and provides technical rationale for recommendations.

+ Possesses and applies advanced scientific knowledge to investigate technical challenges, evaluate data using analytical methodologies to achieve results.

+ Demonstrates an advanced understanding of specialized techniques and identifies possible technical alternatives for a variety of problems. Utilizes multiple analytical instruments. Anticipates, recognizes, and resolves technical problems and provides technical guidance to junior-level scientists.

+ CFT member conducts project planning activities, delivers updates, and recommends process improvements. Works proactively to meet project deliverables and helps to keep junior-level team members accountable.

+ Plans a single, complex project. Schedules work proactively, creates timelines, plans, schedules resources, and begins to demonstrate leadership by holding more junior team members accountable for meeting milestones.

+ May be part of team responsible for submitting ideas for inventions, patent filings and/or scientific publications.

+ Actively participates in lab safety, lab GMP, and routine instrument maintenance.

+ Appropriately documents experimental procedures and clinical protocols; writes technical reports and cost estimates.

+ Responsible for implementing and maintaining the effectiveness of the quality system.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE YOU’LL BRING

Minimum Qualifications

+ Bachelors Degree biological or physical sciences, or mathematics and 7 years of progressively responsible positions in a research development environment or PhD with 2 years of experience.

+ Execution of practical lab skills with increasing complexity of knowledge with experience. Demonstrates knowledge of science and the ability to apply more complex and advanced principles and techniques with experience. Expert level (able to explain and teach) experimental approaches/protocols and scientific methods such as designing experiments and interpreting data. Ability to troubleshoot and investigate scientific issues.

+ Knowledge/use of regulations and standards affecting IVDs and Biologics.

+ Intermediate computer skills – able to learn new computer programs. Advanced MS Excel, Word, and PowerPoint experience highly desired. Knowledge of JMP software is desirable.

+ Experience with ARCHITECT and Alinity IA and CC instruments highly desirable.

Preferred Qualifications

+ Masters Degree with 5 years of experience.

+ Doctorate Degree with 2 years of experience.

The base pay for this position is $83,000.00 – $166,000.00. In specific locations, the pay range may vary from the range posted.
