Are you a skilled writer with an interest in the humanities? The Humanities Research Institute (HRI) is seeking a creative, motivated communicator to support and expand our efforts amplifying the research, programs, and opportunities of the institute as well as the Humanities Without Walls consortium, a Mellon grant-funded initiative headquartered at HRI. The communications specialist will work closely with HRI colleagues, as well as faculty and staff across the university, to create content for social media, the web, and print projects. This is a great opportunity to grow as a communicator while sharing the story of humanities research at Illinois.

This position requires in-person work while being trained (first 3-6 months) and may be eligible for a hybrid schedule thereafter. The ratio of weekly in-office and work-from-home days will be determined in coordination with HRI leadership based on operational needs.

Job Summary
The Communications Specialist will provide input on, and implement, communications to internal and external audiences in support of the mission and priorities of the Humanities Research Institute (HRI). This role includes communications support for Humanities Without Walls (HWW), a 16-member consortium administered by HRI.

Duties & Responsibilities

CONTENT CREATION/DEVELOPMENT: Assist with content management of the HRI and HWW websites, keeping existing content up to date and creating new content as needed (e.g., feature stories, program descriptions, document uploads, etc.). Assist with the development of print pieces, such as posters, mailers, or brochures. Creatively engage key audiences via social media channels. Contribute to and enhance email efforts and digital signage. Provide writing and editing support for newsletters and announcements. Help create short videos, audio clips, and presentations. Use metrics to measure the impact of our communication efforts and contribute recommendations on communication strategy. Work within the HRI and university brand and messaging framework.

EVENT PUBLICITY AND SUPPORT: Assist with communication efforts that support HRI's events, workshops, and conferences (e.g., create invitations, flyers and other publicity, etc.). Maintain public-facing event calendars.

EDITORIAL SUPPORT: Consult with colleagues to provide guidance on communication efforts and university brand standards. Provide writing/editing assistance on colleagues' drafts as needed (e.g., reports, proposals, etc.).

Assume additional appropriate related communications duties to further the mission of HRI.

Additional Physical Demands
Work is performed in an office setting and is mostly sedentary in nature. Occasional lifting boxes of promotional materials and traveling to campus sites for interviews or meetings.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in marketing, business administration, communications, public relations, or a closely related field. One year of professional work experience in marketing, public relations, communications, brand management, or a related professional area.

Note: Master's Degree in an area consistent with the duties of the position may be substituted for one (1) year (12 months) of work experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Demonstrated experience with content creation and implementation in a private, public or an academic environment. Experience working in an academic setting. Strong interest in (or experience with) the humanities, whether academic or professional.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with a command of the English language, including grammar, spelling, and composition. Strong organizational skills, with the capability to manage multiple projects under time constraints. Ability to work proactively, both collaboratively and independently. Demonstrated social media experience, with an understanding of how to maximize reach and audience engagement in the major platforms. Ability to train and adapt to new applications/software. Working knowledge of the Adobe Creative Suite, standard social media platforms and tools, and web content management. Demonstrated creativity.

Appointment Information

This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 5004 - Marketing Associate position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the close date. The salary range is as follows, and is commensurate with experience:

$59,000 - $62,000
