Job Summary:
Reporting to and under the general direction of the Chief Maintenance Engineer, manages the safe and efficient operation of all downtown University campus building systems and equipment including electrical, mechanical, plumbing, control systems, and limited associated utility distribution networks. Major equipment includes chillers, high/low-pressure steam boilers and auxiliaries, chemical treatment, pumps, switch gear, RO systems, generator, and control systems. This position ensures operation and maintenance of the systems and its equipment is performed and documented properly and in compliance with University Sustainability policies and all applicable codes. Provides technical advice to senior management, administration, faculty, staff, and outside consultants relative to design, installation, operation, and repair of plant systems.

Please note: Must be a member of Operating Engineers Local 399, or join after a 90-day probationary period. Physical ability to lift and maneuver heavy weights, climb and descend ladders, and work in hot, cold, cramped and confined quarters.Ability to work safely and at heights on ladders, lifts and scaffolding.Dexterity necessary for the use of tools and manipulation of materials. Must be available and capable of responding to irregularities during evenings and weekends ensuring 24 hour, 7 day per week coverage.
Specific Responsibilities:
Evaluates work load and plans, directs and coordinates maintenance operations of building plumbing, heating, ventilation, AC and ancillary systems and infrastructure equipment.
Organizes daily work schedules and plans longer range projects insuring team communications, needed manpower and customer schedules.
Manages and coordinates budgetary issues with the Chief Engineer and assists in identification and purchase of equipment and supplies in a timely manner and consistent with requirements.
Communicates and maintains morale and discipline among work units including commendations and corrective actions, if appropriate
Prepares reports and other documents as needed for the Chief Engineer and upper Operations management.May periodically fill in for Chief Engineer in his/her absence and give presentations to higher FMO mgt.
Participates in and recommends candidate hiring for open positions.Must annually formally evaluate the work performance of subordinates and recommend corrective action, future promotion or training.
Estimates plumbing, HVAC and other mechanical project work insuring scope, plans, materials and workmanship are in compliance with University and other applicable compliance standards and requirements

Minimum Qualifications:
Minimum two yrs. college level in marine, stationary or mechanical engineering or the equivalent combination of education and experience in which comparable skills may be obtained.
Minimum five years supervisory experience in planning, directing, and coordinating the maintenance of building systems and equipment;
Possess and maintain a valid driver's license recognized by the State of Illinois, provide own reliable transportation, and purchase a University parking permit;
Be a member of Operating Engineers Local 399, or join after a satisfactory completion of a 90-day probationary period;
Must be able to work limited holidays.
Minimum Competencies: (Skills, knowledge, and abilities.)
Thorough understanding of the steam and refrigeration cycles, and how they relate to building environmental systems and equipment. Knowledgeable of electrical distribution and safe working practices;
Excellent written and oral communication skills;
Exceptional customer relationship skills and the ability to establish effective working relationships in a diverse environment;
Demonstrated leadership skills and ability to effectively motivate work groups toward defined and agreed upon common goals;
Comprehensive knowledge of the tools, instruments, methods and standard trade/safety practices pertaining to mechanical, electrical, and plumbing;
Ability to perform calculations applicable to field of experience;
