Job Description

The Highlights:
The Collection and Exhibition Manager is responsible for oversight of the Art Museum's physical assets, including the care and safety of all artwork (whether DPAM's collection or works on loan to the museum); installation logistics of all exhibitions; maintaining complete records on all artwork (cataloging, photography, and data management) and exhibitions; and maintaining the building and equipment with the university's facilities team. The Collection and Exhibitions Manager also oversees commitment of financial resources, approving purchases and maintaining financial records associated with the collection. Through writing and speaking this position serves as a public face for the museum.

What You'll Do:
Collection Manager. The Collection and Exhibition Manager works with the Director on a strategy and implementation for the growth, storage, documentation, research, loan, and use of the collection for exhibitions and class study. Following best practices, this position is responsible for timely and accurate record keeping, photography, safe storage, and access to the Museum's collection of 2,500 works of art. This requires obtaining and keeping documentation of ownership, title, history, and condition of all works in the museum's collection, and maintaining the digital inventory database. This position manages any deaccession activities. Also maintains appropriate levels of insurance coverage for the collection and loan objects, and undertakes regular collection inventories. Coordinates and conducts class tours of the collection and exhibitions. The Collection and Exhibition Manager produces and oversees collection-related website content. The Collection and Exhibition Manager organizes proposed acquisitions for Advisory Board meetings.
Exhibition Manager. The Collection and Exhibition Manager works closely with curators and artists to plan, design, facilitate, and realize installation of all exhibitions. Works with the Curator to maintain the exhibition & publication installation schedules and budgets. Schedules, hires, trains, and manages temporary installation crew and interns for matting, framing, and installation of artwork. Purchases supplies related to exhibitions. Responsible for arranging documentation of exhibitions. The Collection and Exhibition Manager is responsible for all registration duties and handles the paperwork and communications around all loans of artwork, both incoming and outgoing; makes arrangements for packing, crating, and shipping of artwork, working with customs brokers and officials on international loans, and fulfilling conditions of loan agreements. Assists with grant applications when needed and manages all exhibition contracts to include touring exhibitions and guest curators. This position is responsible for maintenance of exhibition files and archives.
The Collection and Exhibition manager trains and oversees the work of student interns and 12-14 DPAM Delegates (gallery monitors). Processes all timesheets, payment requests, and manages schedules for student employees. Helps manage contract specialists. Directs the maintenance staff.
Building Manager. The Collection & Exhibition Manager oversees the physical plant with the university's Facility Operations and Public Safety Departments. They maintain optimum environmental conditions for visitor comfort and object safety; ensuring correct operation of security and lighting systems, and managing the day to day duties of maintenance staff. Maintains storage facilities
Special Museum Projects and other duties as assigned.
The Collection and Exhibition Manager is charged with data management, security, and physical condition of the museum's collection and any other works lent to the museum for exhibition or research. Selects computer software, equipment, and contract specialists; hires, trains, and supervises student interns, as well as staff, in art handling techniques; hires, trains.
The Collection and Exhibition Manager manages a teaching collection of over 4,000 artworks conservatively valued at $15,000,000. Expends revenue from an endowment fund of $30,000 for artwork conservation, and an operating funds in the amount of $464,000.

 

What You'll Need:
