Corporate Scientific & Regulatory Affairs Director, Packaging & Food Contact Materials

As an Associate of Mars Inc., the Corporate SRA Director - Packaging & Food Contact Materials, leads cross-segment SRA initiatives related to additives, ingredients, and regulated undesirable substances in conventional packaging as well as sustainable packaging materials.

The role partners closely with the segments, actioning scientific and regulatory horizon scanning topics, to support a more proactive approach and/or opens up an opportunity in this technical area. The role leverages fit-for-purpose strategic international external networks to engage to advocate Mars positions. The role plays a critical role in establishing a more advanced compliance and technical advocacy infrastructure (e.g. working groups, technical positions, tookits, etc.) for our SRA Community at Mars.

What are we looking for?

  • B Sc. required in a technical area including toxicology, packaging, chemistry, biochemistry, materials science, or related field.
  • Preferred: PhD. degree in toxicology, chemistry, biochemistry, materials science, or related field.
  • Minimum 10 years' experience in SRA.
  • Demonstrated understanding of human and/or pet food regulatory frameworks globally and experienced in navigating regulatory toxicology aspects related to this technical area.
  • Experience with development of technical advocacy positions and external leadership on such topics in relevant FORA
  • Experience in actioning horizon scanning insights to protect or open up opportunities.
  • Ability to manage complex programs, influence stake holders globally, use experience base with intuition to chart future, drive change, communicate and build collaborative partnerships.



What will be your key responsibilities?

SRA SME Focus Area:

Focus on the following SRA SME areas that require a cross-segment approach to protect our freedom to operate or are identified as opportunities for the business to activate:

  • Additives, ingredients, and regulated undesirable substances in conventional packaging as well as sustainable packaging materials.
  • Establishing regulatory frameworks with novel packaging materials where no regulatory framework exists.
  • Establishing a more advanced compliance and technical advocacy infrastructure for our SRA Community at Mars
  • Packaging regulatory compliance: Coordinate and track implementation of new regulations at corporate level.



Issues/Opportunity Management Related to SME Focus Area:

  • Monitor, identify, communicate, and action emerging SRA issues and opportunities.
  • Lead and drive cross-segment/cross-functional development, deployment and communication of Mars SRA positions, advocacy tools, and topic specific resources.
  • Ensure that Mars is well-informed of emerging topics that may influence current and future government and regulatory policies or regulations.
  • Propose research and science needs/considerations to support opportunities for existing and future product portfolio through the scientific and regulatory horizon scanning and issues management processes,
  • Lead establishment of necessary standards/procedure, metrics, and deliverables to assess impact and influence and show a drive to continuous improvement.



Functional Capability Building Related to SME Focus Area:

  • Works to develop SRA specific tools, trainings, toolkits, etc. to increase SRA capability as outlined in the SRA functional roadmap.
