The Trust & Safety team at Yahoo is at the forefront of investigating and remediating abusive activities on our network in accordance with our Community Guidelines and Terms of Service.

A Lot About You:

As the UGC Trust & Safety Legal Director , you will be an attorney focused on legal and policy issues related to the moderation and removal of abusive content on the Yahoo network.

Responsibilities include:

  • Providing legal and policy guidance on issues surrounding user-generated content (UGC) moderation and efforts to detect and eliminate child sexual abuse material (CSAM) from our platforms.
  • Overseeing Yahoo's relationships with the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) and the Technology Coalition.
  • Proactively engaging with other internal stakeholders such as the Consumer, Product and Editorial teams to advise and assist with implementation of safety features across our rapidly developing product portfolio while supporting Company goals.
  • Working with internal stakeholders such as the Privacy and engineering teams to manage special projects related to legal compliance, anti-abuse policies, and content moderation.
  • Working closely with the Public Policy team as a subject matter expert to help inform Yahoo's positions in the evolving content moderation landscape.
  • Crafting responses to user, government, and media inquiries about Yahoo processes and policies.
  • Resolving content-moderation escalations from users, regulators and internal stakeholders.
  • Training and serving as a resource for Yahoo's full-time employee content moderators.
  • Mandatory participation in Yahoo's workplace resilience program and wellness training, including regular counseling.



Minimum Qualifications:

  • You have familiarity with U.S. and international laws and best practices for content moderation, UGC, CSAM reporting, online communities, and communications products.
  • You're able to distill complex issues into straightforward, easy to understand recommendations that can be conveyed both in writing and in conversation.
  • You have experience working across business verticals and communicating with individuals at different levels within the company.
  • You have the proven ability to build relationships and collaborate with a variety of global stakeholders.
  • You are experienced in handling confidential/sensitive material and have a high degree of comfort with regulatory and legal jargon.
  • You have sound coping and stress-management skills.
  • You are able to multitask and prioritize projects, as well as able to appropriately manage expectations and make difficult judgment calls.
  • 6-8+ years of experience as an attorney in UGC moderation, CSAM detection/NCMEC reporting or related law enforcement or policy fields
  • You have an active admission to the bar of at least one U.S. state is required. Substantial time working on legal issues arising in social media, content moderation and/or online child safety is preferred.
