Description
The advanced practice provider is a member of a multidisciplinary team responsible for the evaluation and treatment of plastic and reconstructive surgery patients. Utilizing advanced knowledge and clinical expertise, the advanced practice provider acts as a clinician, coordinator, consultant, educator, leader and researcher.
 Examples of Duties
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
Clinical/Surgical 80% Coordinates delivery of care for patients seen in the clinic with physicians and other health care professionals
Performs certain procedures, under the supervision of the attending physician such as first and/or second assistant in surgery
Assists physician with diagnostic and/or therapeutic procedures performed during outpatient visits
Triages consults/emergencies for inpatients and outpatients and reports to Attending with patient assessment, documents patient and family needs
Participates in the interpretation of assessment data with physician to determine actual or potential problems
Assists in the formulation of plan of care with physicians and other health care professionals. Plans, implements and evaluates nursing interventions based on assessed needs
Facilitates continuity of care through the referral of patients and contacts the referring physicians via phone and fellow-up letters
Performs pre-operative history and physicals as well as post operative follow-up with written and oral instruction to patient, patient's family, hospital and pharmacies
Produce progress notes, discharge summaries, prescribing and/or refilling medications
Be available for ER call, outpatient clinics, and weekend rounding independently or with physician as required
Makes daily patient rounds independently and with physician on inpatients in order to assure the transition of patients between hospital, home and outpatients care and records appropriate data in hospital and clinical progress notes
Uses situations of direct patient care to assist medical staff, surgical house staff and burn team members with assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of patient care needs
Promotes continuity of care between inpatient and outpatient settings through consultation with patients, families, medical, nursing and rehabilitation staff
Participates in the coordination of patient follow up through clinics
Be available for consultation for patients and families throughout the entire recovery process
Identifies and facilitates resolution of clinical and health care system problems
Completes appropriate paperwork for the care of the patient and proper billing of procedures
Participates in the control and utilization of patient care supplies and equipment in a cost effective manner. Follows SIU Medicine procedures to capture patient charges for supplies and procedures
Reports actual or potential risk management situations utilizing the hospital notification system
Teaching
Provides patient and family education based on assessed need regarding the diagnosis, treatment, protocols and diagnostic testing in the areas of plastic surgery.
Teaches patients and family members on necessary prevention activities.
Develops, reviews, and evaluates a wide range of patient educational material related to the areas of plastic surgery.
Provides and participates in professional educational activities related to plastic surgery.
Administration
Initiates and participates in the development of standards and policies regarding patient care through participation on appropriate committees.
As a member of the multidisciplinary team, establishes a strategic direction for the Division of Plastic Surgery.
Participates in the development of operational systems to support the Division of Plastic Surgery.
Demonstrates responsibility and accountability for own professional status.
Promotes positive interpersonal relationships and demonstrates effective communication methods.
Represents the Division of Plastic Surgery at relevant hospital and university meetings
Qualifications
1. Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant program or Nurse Practitioner program; and
2. Received a passing score on the national certifying exam; and
3. Licensure as a Physician Assistant or Certified Nurse Practitioner in the State of Illinois or ( eligible for licensure );
4. Sensitive to the needs of underrepresented minority populations
