Duties and Responsibilities
Directs, delegates and ensures veterinary care of all vertebrate animal species at Loyola University Chicago
Provides oversight for all aspects of vertebrate animal care at the university, including operational management, and short- and long-term planning of animal use/care facilities and services.
Ensures compliance with university policy; state and federal laws and regulations related to the use and care of vertebrate animals, as well as ensuring consistency with industry standards.
Serves as the campus Attending Veterinarian to provide clinical and diagnostic support for laboratory animals.
Serves as a subject matter expert, serving on internal and external committees and task forces related to the responsible use of vertebrate animals in research.
Oversees the development and implementation of training to ensure faculty, staff and students conduct their research (involving vertebrate animals) in a manner that is consistent with quality and compliance standards.
Provide veterinary expertise to investigators in a consultative capacity for animal protocol development and animal model choices/development, advising PIs in experimental design (e.g., for grant applications), particularly within the context of animal welfare and ensuring adequate veterinary care.
Participate in veterinary reviews of all new and renewal protocols
Supervises and oversees performance of all staff/faculty that support the operations of the Comparative Medicine Facility (CMF) and Animal Care Facility (ACF). This will include recommendations related to hiring/firing, defining competencies and performance objectives, planning, assigning and approving work, responding to grievances, disciplining/rewarding and preparing and signing performance appraisals or reviews.
Serves as a voting member of the Hines, Loyola University Chicago Health Science Campus (HSC) and Lakeshore Campus (LSC) Institutional Animal Care and Use Committees (IACUCs).
Serve as a member of the Institutional Biosafety Committee. Advise on and monitor biohazard control policies and procedures relevant to the animal care and use program.
Participate in semi-annual IACUC inspections of animal facilities and the animal care and use program.
Draft or review regulatory documents required for compliance with applicable regulations, guidelines, and policies. This includes PHS Assurance documents, USDA Program of Veterinary Care, USDA Annual Reports, Annual Reports to OLAW (in collaboration with IACUC), and AAALAC annual reports
Provide advice to the Vice Provost for Research on strengths and weaknesses (internal to the University), and opportunities and threats (external to the University) concerning the operation of the facility, and participate in Strategic Plan development for the vertebrate animal facility/program at Loyola University Chicago
Serves as the Attending Veterinarian for the Hines VA (0.15 FTE effort)
Minimum Education and/or Work Experience
Qualifications
Veterinary Medical Degree from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited or approved veterinary medical college or school.
Board certification by the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM) is preferred.
