Job Summary:
The primary responsibility of the Husbandry Technical Trainer is to develop new training modules, continuously revise current training modules and provide specific training to the Center for Comparative Medicine (CCM) Animal Care Staff and to ensure consistency and compliance with CCM standard operating procedures within the Quality Assurance and Training program. This is accomplished through - training within CCM's Quality Assurance and Training program. The well-organized trainer develops the skills needed for training Animal Care Technicians and communicating with the Husbandry management. The trainer collaborates with the QA/TOPs team on revisions for training forms and supports the functions and services we provide to our department as well as to the Northwestern University research community.
Please note: Work hours should add up to 40 hours per week and will typically be somewhere between 6am- 5pm. Work hours will be set by the Manager, Quality Assurance and Training based on departmental needs. Work stations are close to each other and work space is limited. Work may require extended hours sitting at a computer terminal and/or several hours of standing and walking in and around the animal facility.Position requires travel between the Evanston and Chicago campuses. Work will require access to the animal facilities Must be able to negotiate up to a 65 lb force (push/pull) on an occasional basis. Lifting is limited to 50 lbs occasionally and 25 lbs frequently.Must be enrolled in the University's Occupational Health Program which entails filling out a health questionnaire. The health questionnaire is submitted to the University's Occupational Health provider for review. Must be willing to undergo job related background check.
Specific Responsibilities:
Provide training to CCM Husbandry Staff.Provide new employee orientation to CCM Husbandry Staff.Provide On-the-Job Training (OJT) to Husbandry Staff based on Standard Operating.Procedures (SOPs) related to all facets of the Husbandry operations including animal health checks, use of specialized equipment and animal care.
Assess the competency of Husbandry Staff through continued observation of adherence to the SOPs specific to individual training tasks.
Document training of CCM Husbandry Staff
Assist with the writing and development of SOPs and training materials relevant to the husbandry program.Serve as a quality assurance representative to assess internal SOPs and good practices
Support Quality Assurance/Training program for monitoring effective sanitization throughout all CCM Animal Facilities.
Maintain all documentation relevant to the water quality testing and sanitization monitoring program.
Assist with CCM's water quality testing
Assist with the administration and implementation of CCM's Staff Continuing Education Program.
Assist with the administration and training of AALAS certification classes.
Assist the Manager of Quality Assurance and Training with other duties and projects as assigned
Miscellaneous
Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
A high school diploma or its equivalent is required
5 years' experience in the laboratory animal field
American Association of Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) certification at the ALAT level

Associate Degree or Bachelor's Degree in a Science-related field, or equivalent course work or experience.

Target hiring range for this position will be between $22.00 to $27.50 per hour. Offered salary will be determined by the applicant's education, experience, knowledge, skills and abilities, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data.
