Job Description
Job Summary:
The Respiratory Care Student Assistant Therapist provides respiratory care services the safe and effective care of neonatal, pediatric and adult patient populations. Performs respiratory care treatments and procedures according to order and under the proximal supervision of a licensed Respiratory Care Practitioner who is in the facility and readily available to them, if needed. As well as provides vital support services by ensuring availability of material resources through the stocking, assembly, maintenance, calibration (including quality assurance) of life support, diagnostic, and therapeutic devices. Understands how equipment integrates into the Respiratory Care Practitioner's delivery of patient care for the needs of neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, and adult patients.

Job Duties:

Performs respiratory care according to order and policy/protocol.

Administers inhaled medications, performs airway clearance, bronchial hygiene and lung expansion therapy.

Calibrates diagnostic and life support devices, e.g., ventilators, analyzers, and monitors.

Communicates with the family and members of the multidisciplinary team to identify health care needs.

Evaluates the patient's progress through continuous observation and assessment of responses to treatments and therapies.

Demonstrates knowledge of pertinent aspects and competency with protocols related to the use of chemical disinfection, high level disinfection, and sterilization as required.

Incorporates current hospital and departmental quality initiatives into daily activities.

Works cooperatively as a team member to foster achievement of department/hospital goals.

Adheres to communication, and professional image standards that support the hospital mission and philosophy.

Assures availability of all life support equipment and medical gas for department operation.

Ensures medical gases are handled safely.

Assembles equipment in preparation for patient use.

Processes equipment for cleaning/sterilization in accordance with the Hospitals infection control guidelines and stocks respiratory care equipment.

Replaces and maintains equipment set-ups in assigned areas according to department guidelines.

Assures charging of respiratory equipment and records the status for purpose of charging and medical records.

Sets up and maintains emergency standby equipment at patient's bedside and/or designated areas.

Assures availability and function of life support equipment and medical gases for daily operation.

Performs job functions adhering to service principles with customer service focus of innovation, service excellence and teamwork to provide the highest quality care and service to our patients, families, co-workers, and others.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Actively enrolled in a Center on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC) accredited Respiratory Care Program

Basic Life Support Certification by the American Heart Association.

Ability to demonstrate critical thinking skills, accepting of change, demonstrate adaptability.

Ability to effectively communicate with patients, families, physicians, and hospital staff.

EducationHigh School Diploma/GED (Required)

(BLS) - Basic Life Support - American Heart Association
