Position Overview

The Division of Rehabilitation Services is seeking to hire a cook to prepare and cook food on an assigned shift at the Illinois School for the Visually Impaired (ISVI).  This position may be assisted in preparations by Support Service Workers in the operation of standard cooking equipment and preparation of special diet foods. This position assists in maintenance and cleaning of kitchen equipment and all work areas to meet regulations and relieves other cooks on days off.

 

Job Responsibilities

  1. Prepares and cooks food on an assigned shift.
  2. Operates standard cooking equipment such as mixing machines, steam cookers, toaster, food chopper and gas or electric stove.
  3. Prepares special diet food as directed by the Dietary Manager.
  4. Assists in maintenance and cleaning of kitchen equipment and all work areas to meet regulations and maintain safe sanitary and healthful conditions in work areas.
  5. Relieves Cooks on days off and responsible for own shift during Dietary Manager’s days off.
  6. Performs other duties as assigned or required which are reasonably within the scope of duties enumerated above.

 

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to the completion of high school and six (6) months of cooking experience which provides working knowledge of food preparation and cooking methods on a large-scale basis.
  2. Requires possession of a valid Food Service Sanitation Certificate issued by the Illinois Department of Public Health or requires possession of a Certified Food Protection Manager (CFPM) certification from a program accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI); Conference for Food Protection (CFP).

*Qualifying state employees in the Upward Mobility Program may complete combinations of specific proficiency tests and training programs leading to a certificate of proficiency in lieu of the stated education and experience requirements for this class.

 

Conditions of Employment

  1. Requires ability to lift and/or carry items weighing up to 50 lbs.
  2. Requires ability to pass the IDHS background check.
  3. Requires ability to pass a drug screen for drugs prohibited from recreational use under Illinois Law.
