About the Role

The Engineering Development Program (EDP) is all about developing the next generation of industry leaders and technical experts. The purpose of Caterpillar’s Engineering Development Program is to harness your ability and further develop you through rotational assignments and learning opportunities so that you may not only fulfill your career goals but provide excellent service to Caterpillar and its customers. Our Engineering Development Program is a flexible twelve-month program that addresses the onboarding needs of engineers and technologists hired directly into their full-time positions.

What You Will Do

Caterpillar Inc. is seeking a Structural Simulation Engineer to support Virtual Product Development (VPD) technology and product development. Primary job responsibilities may include application of structural system simulation to influence early product concepts and design decisions, to improve the existing products and to develop simulation related processes and technologies. Other areas of responsibility include, but not limited to, are as following:

+ Applying basic engineering knowledge to develop technical skills and understanding of the business, product, systems, and procedures.

+ Assisting with the analysis and implementation of new or improved processes, products, or systems.

+ Helping with resolving issues with design, manufacture or build sequences for routine processes and simple products. Assisting in ensuring design acceptance and manufacturing readiness through communications.

+ Performing needs analysis and initiating ideas.

The engineer must manage his/her own development, continuously learning through experience and staying abreast of technology changes. Learning will focus on methods, processes and systems applied to engineering functions, key engineering skills, practical application of theory, communications and building a knowledge of Caterpillar’s products, suppliers and customers.

Information Capture

+ Knowledge of the methods, channels and processes to obtain needed information; ability to identify, capture and document relevant business information in an auditable, organized, understandable and easily retrievable manner.

Analytical Thinking

+ Knowledge of techniques and tools that promote effective analysis; ability to determine the root cause of organizational problems and create alternative solutions that resolve these problems

Decision Making and Critical Thinking

+ Knowledge of the decision-making process and associated tools and techniques; ability to accurately analyze situations and reach productive decisions based on informed judgment.

Effective Communications

+ Understanding of effective communication concepts, tools and techniques; ability to effectively transmit, receive, and accurately interpret ideas, information, and needs through the application of appropriate communication behaviors.

Technical Excellence

+ Knowledge of a given technology and various application methods; ability to develop and provide solutions to significant technical challenges.

+ Uses flow charts, Pareto charts, fish diagrams, etc. to disclose meaningful data patterns. Uses logic and intuition to make inferences about the meaning of the data and arrive at conclusions.

Engineering – MFG

+ Knowledge of processes, techniques and methods of engineering in a manufacturing environment; ability to design and implement materials, structures, machines, devices, systems and processes that safely realize a desired objective or invention.

Troubleshooting Technical Problems

+ Knowledge of troubleshooting approaches, tools and techniques; ability to anticipate, detect and resolve technical problems in a manufacturing environment.

Degree Requirements:

+ A minimum MS degree in Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Aerospace Engineering or Engineering Mechanics. Applicants must be pursuing or have completed one of the above, or related, degrees at an accredited school, graduating in 2024 or within the last 3 years. Applicants must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0/4.0 (no rounding).

Other Requirements:

+ Course work or research focus on finite element theory and method

+ Demonstrated knowledge of data analytics and machine learning techniques in the context of finite element analysis

+ Previous technical internship, co-op, or research/relevant experience

+ Non-linear material and large deformation, contact/impact, frequency/transient response dynamics FEA analysis using ABAQUS, NASTRAN or ANSYS

+ Creo or other CAD software tools.

+ FEA pre/post process software such as Hyperworks, ANSA, SimCenter 3D, etc.

Top Candidates Will Also Have:

+ Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or Engineering Mechanics with academic focus in structural simulation and/or multi-domain system dynamics simulation

+ Previous work in data analytics, machine learning (ML), reduced order models (ROM) technique applications in the context of finite element analysis

+ Structural, Thermal and Material simulations, Validation and Simulation & Test integration

+ Nonlinear bolted joint and fatigue life analysis

+ Proven proficiency in simulation tools such as ABAQUS, ANSYS, NASTRAN, LS-Dyna, NX, Fe-Safe/nCode, Hyperworks, Simlab, Dynasty, TomSim, Adams, etc.

+ Knowledge of mechanical systems (structures, engines, drivetrains, hydraulics, etc.).

+ Software programming skills for engineering analysis and process automation

+ Strong initiative, communication skills, customer focus, teamwork, and planning skills and Leadership experience

Additional Information:

The location for this position is either Tucson, AZ or Champaign, IL.
