Position Summary, Requirements, and Qualifications

Overview
The College of Engineering and Engineering Technology (CEET) invites applications for an anticipated tenure-track assistant professor position in advanced microelectronics engineering and advanced manufacturing technologies, jointly between Electrical Engineering and Engineering Technology Departments at Northern Illinois University (NIU). This tenure track position appointment will begin fall 2024. The candidate must be able to demonstrate the ability to develop a highly successful independent research program in advanced microelectronics engineering and advanced manufacturing. Successful candidates are expected to teach highly effectively at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, and should have a strong potential for generating external funding for their research program and preferably have post-doctoral research experience or industry experience.

The Departments of Electrical Engineering and Engineering Technology are fully accredited by ABET and are well established and enjoy a solid reputation for graduating functional engineers, research, and service to the community and profession. Each of the departments are approximately the same size in terms of faculty and students. In terms of faculty, the Department of Electrical Engineering consists of 8 full-time faculty members, and the Department of Engineering Technology has 9 full-time faculty members. In terms of students, there are approximately 200 undergraduate and 40 graduate students in the Department of Electrical Engineering, while the Department of Engineering Technology has approximately 200 undergraduate and 10 graduate students.

The Department of Electrical Engineering also offers M.S. and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering. Laboratories for microelectronics, signal processing, biomedical, and power electronics are well established in Department of Electrical Engineering. In particular, Department of Electrical Engineering has an approximately 10,000 sq. ft. microelectronics facility with approximately 3,500 sq. ft. of Class 100 clean room for microelectronics, MEMS, and sensor fabrication, research, and teaching.

The Department of Engineering Technology offers M.S. in Industrial Management and Technology and has well established Laboratories for Computer-Aided-Design, Automation, Machining, CNC Machines, Metal Fabrication and Welding, Robotics and PLC, Controls, Electronics, Electric Machines, Renewable Energy, Plastic, Fluid Power, Metrology, Environmental Health and Safety (EHS), and Building Energy Efficiency, Ergonomics and Management (BEEEAM).

Strong ties with industries and national laboratories in the Northern Illinois region, including Argonne and Fermi, have helped CEET faculty attract externally funded research projects on a regular basis. NIU is located 65 miles west of Chicago and has 16,000 students. NIU's vision is to be the premier student-centered, research-focused public university in the Midwest contributing to the advancement of knowledge for the benefit of the people of the region, the state, the nation, and the world. The College of Engineering and Engineering Technology also has well established Ph.D. degrees in Mechanical Engineering, and Industrial & Systems Engineering. In addition, the College has relatively new B.S. degree programs in Biomedical Engineering and Mechatronics Engineering.
