Job Description

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), the nation's leading advocacy organization for children's healthcare, is seeking a Director of Hospital and Surgical Subspecialties to direct the operations of the Hospital and Surgical Specialties team and oversee the administrative management of its constituent committees, sections, and applicable task forces, and the programs and projects emanating from those groups. Reporting to the Sr Director, Subspecialty Initiatives, this role will represent the team and its constituent groups in a liaison capacity to senior leadership, the Board of Directors, and other applicable medical/child advocacy organizations and coalitions. In collaboration with AAP national advisory committees, specialty sections, task forces, and other clinical specialists/consultants, the director will implement the strategic objectives and child health priorities of the AAP through the establishment of policy, advocacy, professional education, and outreach. Additionally, the director will engage in a high level of day-to-day interaction with AAP members, allied health professionals, policy makers, regulators, and industry spokespersons in matters pertaining to the practice of pediatrics, AAP policy, and quality of care as they apply to the team's disciplines.
Some tasks include:
Direct the operations and functions of assigned programs and constituent committees, sections, and councils, including budgeting, strategic planning, and program development, monitoring, and evaluation.
Contribute to the coordination of the work of the Subspecialty Initiatives team to align activities of constituent groups with AAP priorities, including the integration of Hospital and Surgical Subspecialties initiatives into the AAP efforts to advance team-based care and specialty care integration into primary care. Provide primary staff support to assigned committees, councils, sections, and other relevant constituent groups, including leading and directing staff in agenda development, meeting planning, meeting minutes, newsletters, and completion of proposals, projects, and other action items.
Develop and manage assigned budgets and collaborate with the Sr Director on the development and management of other team budgets and equipment requests.
Collaborate with Sr Director and Development staff in identifying corporate, foundation, and other funding sources to support team initiatives. Prepare and/or assist with drafting grant and contract proposals and manage implementation of project activities and compliance with reporting requirements.
Collaborate with relevant staff on the planning and implementation of committee, council, and section continuing medical education (CME) courses.
Collaborate and coordinate with AAP Federal Advocacy staff in matters pertaining to legislation, coalition activity, Congressional hearings, and proposed rule-making with child health implications.
Respond to inquiries from AAP members, allied health professionals, governmental agencies, and others regarding Hospital and Surgical Subspecialties activities.
Oversee the development of annual committee and section reports, including goals and objectives for committees, councils, and sections.
Analyze clinical and public health issues and policies and provide technical and editorial assistance to committees, councils, and sections in the development of AAP policy, programs, projects, and publications; supervise the production of policy statements, clinical reports, and manuals. Support the team managers with production, content development, editing, and technical review requirements of AAP publications in the area of Hospital and Surgical Subspecialties.
Work with Marketing, Publishing, and other staff in the design, production, and promotion of committee and section publications and in the development, promotion, and implementation of patient education initiatives.
Represent the department and/or AAP at meetings with outside organizations and agencies as requested. Represent the team in selected meetings with other areas of the AAP as determined by the needs of the program or project.
Supervise and mentor assigned staff. Encourage a work environment that promotes inclusion and belonging of all staff.
