Job Summary

The Senior Manager, Network Efficiency is responsible for working with the Network Operations, Engineering and Mechanical teams to identify strategic initiatives and deliver projects that positively affect the CN’s key performance metrics. Moreover, the role tracks the progress of these initiatives in relation to the organization’s Key Performance Indicator (KPI) objectives. The position leads CN’s continuous improvement focus by evaluating, planning, and implementing improvements in processes and practices and coaches the teams within work units. The role collaborates with functional owners to diagnose problems and prioritize and source viable solutions. The position is involved in project planning, cost estimation, creation of financials, resource management and risk assessment.

Main Responsibilities

Continuous Improvement

· Identify and implement processes and projects that will improve efficiency and reduce cost

· Develop and deploy reports and organizational dashboards to support ongoing efficiency initiatives

· Drive culture change to instill focus on fact-based management practices, the use of Six Sigma, Lean and other continuous improvement methodologies

· Work closely with continuous improvement leads and Network Operations, Engineering and Mechanical teams across the organization to design new processes

· Increase standardization of work processes and drive consistency across the system

· Identify, eliminate or mitigate major Cost of Poor Quality (COPQ) processes to reduce defects with the goal of becoming defect-free

· Drive quality control efforts and 5S continuous improvement methodology implementation

· Identify operational continuous improvement training requirements alongside functional leads

Strategic Planning

· Develop a continuous improvement strategy related to efficiency and reliability

· Support the efficiency focus through project management, including implementing the new processes, establishing all reports, KPIs and governance around them, handling the schedule, budget, and documentation, as well as preparing other project materials and tools

· Perform assessments utilizing analytical skills to identify improvement opportunities as well as develop and deliver selected continuous process improvement initiatives

· Identify and implement changes that encompass innovative ideas and ways to improve process, work efficiency and throughput

Working Conditions

The role has standard working conditions in an office environment with a regular workweek from Monday to Friday. The role requires occasional travel (up to 40%) within Canada and the United States (U.S.). Due to the nature of the role, the incumbent must be able to meet tight deadlines, handle pressure, and stress.

Requirements

Experience

Continuous Improvement

· Minimum 10 years of continuous improvement experience within the transportation industry

o Experience teaching, training, and leading continuous improvement implementation

o Experience working in a unionized environment*

Education/Certification/Designation

· Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, Engineering, or a related field

· Black Belt certification and ability to become a certified Master Black Belt*

· Expertise in data analytics using various tools such as MS Access, Tableau and PowerBI

· Broad understanding of process improvement and sustainment methodologies (e.g., Lean, Value Stream Mapping, Six-Sigma, Change Management)*
