Description

Metra is one of the largest and most complex commuter rail systems in North America, serving Cook, DuPage, Will, Lake, Kane, and McHenry Counties. The agency is linking communities in Northeastern Illinois by providing safe, reliable, and efficient commuter service.
Transportation is responsible for providing safe, efficient and dependable transportation to commuters on all Metra-operated lines: Milwaukee North and West, Rock Island, Metra Electric, SouthWest Service, North Central Service and Heritage Corridor and those lines operating under purchase of service agreements: BNSF and Union Pacific. In addition to all employees directly involved in providing train service, the Transportation Department also oversees the Rules Department, Dispatching Office, Crew Management Center, Station Services, Customer Service, Ticket Services and GPS Center.
Reporting directly to the Director, Sub Operations - Rock Island District, the Assistant Superintendent, will oversee all transportation and operations activities on the district to ensure the safe, efficient, and on-time operation of commuter passenger service; ensure compliance with rules, schedules, and service standards. Supervise Trainmasters, Road Foreman of Engines, train, engine, tower operators and yard service operating employees. Work closely with train dispatchers, including both Metra and foreign line dispatchers. Observe, instruct, and correct employee performance to ensure the maintenance of proper service standards; mentor junior transportation officers. Conduct training classes on safety and operating rules, the use of Passenger Train equipment and efficiency testing. Instruct district officers to ensure proper operational testing. Decide/implement staffing decisions, performance evaluations, and performance improvement, disciplinary, and/or termination procedures. Make recommendations regarding hiring, performance evaluations, disciplinary and/or termination procedures. Responsible for the safety objectives, goals, and program of the organization ensuring compliance with applicable safety rules and regulations. Works under both inside and outside environmental conditions under prevailing conditions of heat, cold, rain, and snow. This position is subject to random drug and/or alcohol testing. Perform other related duties as assigned to meet the ongoing needs of the organization.
Final salary will be determined in part by the qualifications of the selected candidate.
Candidates can expect salary offers that range from the minimum to the mid-point of the salary range. Metra provides full pay ranges, so candidate can consider their growth potential.
Metra is a railroad employer subject to the provisions of the Railroad Retirement Tax Act, not the Social Security Administration.

Requirements

Must possess a high school diploma. Bachelor's degree preferred.
In addition to #1, must have a minimum of seven (7) years' of experience in railroad operations.
Must have three (3) years direct supervisory experience which includes two (2) years at the level of Trainmaster, Road Foreman of Engines or similar positions that includes day-to-day employee management, assigning tasks, providing guidance and training, monitoring performance, conflict management, budgeting, hiring, disciplinary and/or termination.
Knowledge of Federal Railroad Administration and Federal Transit Administration and other government, local and state regulations and standards.
Working knowledge of train operating procedures, labor agreements, and federal, state and local rules and regulations.
Knowledge of budgeting is preferable.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Excellent public presentation skills.
Proficient in Microsoft Suite applications.
Must qualify and be current on Operating Rules.
Must have a Conductor certificate.
Must possess a current valid driver's license
Ability to stand, walk, and/or sit, for extended periods of time.
Hearing/Visual acuity, far/near, depth perception, field of vision, color vision.
Ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds.
Must be willing to travel within Metra's 6-county region.
Must be available to work flexible hours in the early morning, late afternoon, evenings, or weekends.
