Position Summary

The Office of Minority Student Affairs (OMSA) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is accepting applications for the position of Academic Skills Coordinator. The Academic Skills Coordinator is a coordinator of learning enhancement across all disciplines and will join a team of professionals making transformative moves to improve the retention, success, and graduation of undergraduates at Illinois, particularly, students who identify as first-generation, historically underrepresented, low-income, and/or academically underperforming. Utilizing experience and expertise, the Academic Skills Coordinator will take a lead role in developing strategies, programs, workshops, and classes to increase students' study, thinking, learning, and success skills to grow and sustain persistence, retention, achievement, and graduation rates for student participants. Anchored in the campus' strategic plan, this position will greatly enhance the department's ability to expand success for the students we serve at Illinois.

Job Summary
Reporting to the Director of Tutoring and Academic Services in the Michael L. Jeffries, Sr. Center for Access and Academic Success, responsible for developing and implementing instructional programs and workshops, hosting group and individual academic skills coaching sessions, assisting with outreach as well as assessment and evaluation of related instructional programs and workshops.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • INSTRUCTIONAL PROGRAM AND WORKSHOPS
    • Designs, develops, implements, and teaches all the academic and life skill courses. Provides general academic success initiatives.
    • Performs administrative tasks such as scheduling workshops, coordinating enrollment, and tracking attendance as well as scheduling and monitoring of academic and coaching services and related record-keeping.
    • Develops and coordinates communication and marketing plans for relevant tutoring and academic services technology (e.g., StudentLingo and NetTutor etc.).
  • ACADEMIC SKILLS COACHING
    • Mentors and coaches students in the development of their metacognitive skills by providing group and individualized academic support in the areas of critical thinking, problem-solving, learning and study strategies, note-taking, test-taking, memory and mapping, reading for comprehension, notetaking, organization and time management strategies, resiliency, etc.
    • Develops, designs, and implements specific individualized plans that provide individual academic skills assessments and consultations and offer assistance that complements the identified need(s).
  • OUTREACH
    • Delivers presentations about tutoring services and regular, ongoing programming of workshops and other activities to student organizations, cultural houses, and other targeted populations as well as coordinates other outreach efforts.
    • Assists with the development and editing of printed, online, and videotaped academic skills materials.
    • Develops and implements relevant training and professional development services to effectively support student academic success and retention.
  • ASSESSMENT AND EVALUATION
    • Collects and analyzes data to show the impact of our academic services in relation to the persistence, and retention of OMSA eligible students.
  • GENERAL OFFICE DUTIES • Participates in staff and other meetings. • Participates in the annual new student orientation, registration, and other similarly related activities. • Assists with meeting the operational needs by performing other appropriate related duties. • Represents the director at meetings and events, as requested. • Leads or serves on department and/or campus committees, boards, and councils, as requested. • Performs evening, weekend, and business/conference travel, as requested.
Additional Physical Demands
This position travels campus to deliver presentations, teach workshops and classes and participates in meetings and other activities.

Travel Requirements
5% Evening, weekend, and business/conference travel will be required.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree. One year of experience teaching/coaching learning styles, learning strategies, note-taking, study strategies, test-taking, memory and mapping, critical thinking, problem-solving, organization, time management strategies, resiliency etc. One year of experience working in a tutoring or learning center in a higher education setting. Experience with conducting educational workshops or experience coordinating events and activities that augment students' academic preparation. Demonstrated experience working with a diverse undergraduate population.

Specialty Factors

Preferred Qualifications

Master's degree in Educational Psychology, Special Education, Curriculum and Instruction, higher education or related field required.
Two years of experience teaching learning styles, learning and study strategies, note-taking, test-taking, memory, and mapping etc.
Academic Coaching Certification in higher education administration, student personnel or related field (NTA/CRLA/ATP/ICLCA).
Knowledge of the educational issues, trends, and research related to student success.
Experience using databases to produce reports.

Appointment Information

This is a 100% full-time Academic Professional position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after 8/1/2024. Target salary for this position is $58,000.00
