About the Department

The Clinical Chemistry Section in the Department of Pathology provides a diverse array of clinical laboratory testing for patient care and clinical research at the University of Chicago Medicine (UCM). The section also develops, validates, and implements new biomarkers for health and disease management. Technologies employed encompass total laboratory automation, liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry, immunoassays, electrophoresis and DNA microarrays.

Job Summary

We are recruiting for a Research Assistant to assist our clinical laboratory section and clinical translational labs in performing assay developmental and validation work in CLIA and CAP accredited laboratories. Our clinical laboratories are involved in providing routine and state-of-the-art clinical laboratory testing to support patient care and clinical research at UCM.

Responsibilities

The Research Assistant will perform the following under supervision:
  • Assays development and validation studies, including running the tests and quality controls as needed.
  • Insuring protocols are developed and maintained according to required federal regulatory standards (CLIA).
  • Collection, processing and storage of leftover, blood, urine and other body fluids samples.
  • Data collection, entry and statistical analyses.
  • Prepare, edit and submit IRB protocols.
  • This job provides technical and administrative support in a laboratory environment performing basic laboratory techniques, research and analysis under direction.
  • Provides routine or standardized laboratory duties by collecting data in support of research projects under direct supervision.
  • Collects and enters data. Assists in analysis of data and with preparation of reports, manuscripts and other documents.
  • Complies with institution, state and federal regulatory policies, procedures, directives, and mandates.
  • Performs other related work as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:
Minimum requirements include vocational training, apprenticeships or the equivalent experience in related field (not typically required to have a four-year degree).

Preferred Qualifications

Education:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Biological Science/Chemistry/Biochemistry or related field.

Experience:
  • Knowledge and/or experience with standard laboratory techniques (e.g. reagents preparation, pipetting, using analytical balances, etc.).
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access).
  • Proficient with Basic Biostatistics.

Preferred Competencies
  • Able to follow instructions to perform analytical experiments to develop and validate assays.
  • Able to retrieve leftover specimens, prepare aliquots and organize for long term storage in freezers and retrieval as needed.
  • Excellent record keeping and organizational skills.
  • Strong multi-tasking and time-management capabilities.
  • Interactive communication and the ability to work as a team player.
  • Able to follow instructions to help draft an IRB proposal for new research studies.
  • Able to follow instructions to run tests on automated analyzers, and other instruments, e.g. liquid chromatograpy/mass spectrometers, immunoassays, ELISAs.

Working Conditions
  • Must be able to work in a clinical laboratory setting with blood, urine, body fluids following universal precautions.
  • CLIA/CAP clinical laboratory.
  • Must be physically able to move gas cylinders and small packages.
  • Weekend/Evening hours: Occasionally may require weekend or after hours duties if clinical specimen collection has to happen on those rare occasions.
