POSITION SUMMARY: Post Anesthesia Care Unit
A Registered Professional Nurse accountable for the coordination and delivery of quality patient care, based on age, in the Post Anesthesia Care Unit, utilizing the nursing process of assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation in the pre-operative/operative & post-operative periods of patient care.  He/She shall perform nursing functions in accordance with the policies, procedures, and objectives of the Nursing Services.  Perform other duties as directed by Manager of Surgery and Post Anesthesia Care Services.

Position Duties and Responsibilities
Has knowledge of all types of anesthesia and complications which may occur; possesses clear knowledge of nursing interventions for those complications.  Possesses working knowledge of Pharmacology.
Assists in maintaining a safe and aseptic environment for patients and others in the Post Anesthesia Care Unit.
Maintains and respects all patient rights and cares for the patient in a dignified and compassionate manner.  Maintains and respects all patient related information (confidentiality).
Provides a written assessment of the patient on admission and updates continuously during their Post Anesthesia Care Unit stay.  Evaluates care and needs of each patient specifically related to age, then reports assessment to Anesthesia, Surgery staff, and physician.
Implements nursing plan of care based on physician orders and nursing diagnosis with regard to age in accordance with established Policies and Procedures and safety precautions.
Monitors and documents patient:  Airway, respirations, (Blood Pressure, pulse every 10 minutes, or as patient condition demands), Cardiac Rhythm, level of consciousness, skin integrity, IV fluids, etc.  Monitors drains, tubes, dressings, possible drainage and Irrigation (if possible).
Is self-directed with personal and learning needs on an ongoing basis.  Seeks learning opportunities to meet the identified needs through formal and informal means.
Ability, skills, and knowledge to evaluate, observe, care and counsel patients, and administer medications and treatments as prescribed by a licensed physician, dentist, or podiatrist.
Assists patient in frequent deep breathing and coughing, as well as walking and orientation to surroundings and reassures patient.  Patient will remain in PACU until appropriate criteria is met, R.N. will then transfer patient to appropriate unit.
Patient families, nursing staff and physician(s) will be notified of the transfer.  Assists in development of Post-Op education with regard to age utilizing all available resources.
Demonstrates integrity, dependability and resourcefulness, demonstrates enthusiasm for work.
Evaluates effectiveness of educational programs; changes to meet personal learning needs.
Is responsible and accountable to the Manager of Surgical and Post Anesthesia Care Services for maintaining current CPR, ACLS, and PALS certification as required.
Demonstrates knowledge of, and supports the philosophy, goals and objectives of the Post Anesthesia Care Department, Illinois Nursing Act, Hospital and Nursing Policies and Procedures.
Acts as a resource person regarding patient care, specialty area, orientation and teaching of the staff.
Strives for quality in patient care and as necessary, challenges and/or corrects errors of peers to ensure patient safety and well-being.
