Overview
The primary function of this position is the safe operation and educational soundness of numerous studios in the School of Art and Design for the production of both 2D and 3D artwork.
Position Summary
In consultation with the Director and the faculty, the FAS Tech Specialist will work with students and faculty in the safe use and maintenance of equipment and in the appropriateness of equipment to resolve aesthetic issues in art making. In consultation with faculty, this position will make recommendations on and assist in the acquisition of new or replacement equipment and in long- and short-range planning for the efficient use of studio spaces relevant to equipment needs. The FAS Tech Specialist may also teach periodically as needed.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Equipment Procurement - 35%
Studio technician supports procuring and replacing specialized equipment parts required for maintenance.
Working with graduate student tech support in all studios.
Opening studios for early or after-hours student access.
Maintenance of equipment in the woodshop, sculpture studios, Grant studios, and other studios as required. This includes monitoring quality and changing perishable machine parts such as blades, sanding belts, grinding wheels, etc.
Other maintenance needs include making sure machines are running properly, replacing broken parts or machine engines when practical, and procuring materials related to equipment maintenance.
Oversee supply drop-offs/load-in of materials and order and maintain various gas tanks in sculpture and metals areas.


Woodshop Management - 30%
Woodshop management and graduate student supervision. This includes supervision and delegation of duties to graduate assistants assigned to the sculpture or woodshop areas. The woodshop can be utilized by all students in the School of Art and Design for discipline specific needs.
Oversight duties include ensuring that students are using equipment safely, making certain that equipment is running properly to allow for safe use, and helping students with technical problems related to the class specific projects. The woodshop is open for assigned hours during which orderly management is required.
Comprehensive instruction related to safe use of all machines and equipment is expected, particularly for foundations classes.

Inventory Management - 20%
Equipment ranging from computers to discipline-specific materials and building assets required for studio use and inventory maintenance.
Miscellaneous heavy lifting and moving of materials, equipment, and furniture for the optimization of various workspaces.

Building Safety - 10%
Obtaining and maintaining basic OSHA and BLS 1 0-hour certification training.
Oversight and reporting of building safety and maintenance issues.
Follow-up and reparation of identified safety maintenance needs.
Yearly inventory and filling of emergency kits: ordering and replacing out of date items.
Connecting with contracting services to refill eyewash stations.
Serve on the University Laboratory Safety Committee: attend regular meetings, create basic safety processes and documentation for all campus locations, observe accident reporting protocols.

Key Control - 5%
Coordinate with campus key control.
Keep records of key allocations to all rooms.
Work with faculty, staff, and students to issue and collect building keys.
Ensure collection of key deposits and maintain complete records of all key transactions.
Minimum Required Qualifications (Civil Service)
High school diploma or equivalent.
Two (2) years (24 months) of work experience repairing hand and power tools.
