Job Summary:

A center for global excellence in undergraduate and graduate education and research, Northwestern’s Department of Chemistry seeks a self-directed senior administrative professional to support tenured faculty and their research group.  The Business Administrator ensures the effective, compliant, & efficient daily management of all operational, financial, & business functions in support of the business area’s mission & in coordination with central offices such as HR, Budget, Facilities, Sponsored Research, IT, & Provost. Represents business area on internal & external administrative matters by recommending alternatives and suggestions.   

This is a full-time (37.5 HR) hybrid position that works three days on site, and two days remote. 

The target hiring range for this position will be between $ 70,017 – $98,462 per year.  Offered salary will be determined by the applicant’s education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data. 

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Lab Coordination: Manages day-to-day operations of research groups.  Coordinates searches for research positions, communicates visa requirements, and onboards new hires and students.  Facilitates appointments, promotions, and departures of lab members. Schedules qualifying exams and thesis defenses. Provides support to all group members, answering inquiries, and recommending campus resources.  Identifies service improvement opportunities to better support group’s success.  Update group website. 
  • Monitors research lab compliance & responds to space surveys and Risk Management reports. Ensures communication with Principal Investigator (PI) regarding LUMEN participation.   
  • Research Administration: Performs pre- and post-award research administration, utilizing established systems to ensure compliance with all applicable regulations. Proactively updates and maintains documents required for the submission of research proposals from various information sources to obtain relevant data.  Reviews grant solicitations to ensure all needed documents are prepared in accordance with requirements.
