Overview

The Computing and Information Technology Directorate works to re-imagine how digital technologies can simplify the research experience, enable data-driven insights for decision makers, and accelerate PNNL’s research missions. Our Middleware and Database team is seeking a highly skilled Cloud Data Specialist to join our Cyber Security & Digital Operations directorate’s Cloud Data team. Essential duties include database administration and business collaboration to design, develop, implement, maintain, and support our Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) product suite with Cloud-based automated solutions. Candidates will possess a deep understanding of enterprise-level IT database architecture and can challenge the team to innovate various database and cloud-based SaaS solutions. Additional responsibilities include governance, security, and compliance to support business operations and data analysis requirements. Success in this role means delivering results through strong technical skills, communications, and collaboration with a relentless focus on what’s best for our users and the business.

Responsibilities

Applies engineering and technical solutions to the installation, design, maintenance, backup & recovery, and security for on-premises and cloud-based databases such as SQL Server, Azure SQL Database, and AWS RDS. Supports the installation and operation of an Enterprise ERP solution ensuring data governance, security and compliance while safeguarding data privacy and mitigating risks. Automates tasks to provide efficient processing.

Other responsibilities include:

+ Classify data by sensitivity and maintain an inventory of stored data.

+ Dentify and assess security risks and vulnerabilities.

+ Encrypt data at rest and in transit.

+ Implement strong authentication and access controls.

+ Deploy intrusion detection/prevention systems and keep software updated.

+ Use role-based access control and principle of least privilege.

+ Monitor user access and activity.

+ Ensure compliance with relevant regulations.

+ Implement data retention policies and audit trails.

+ Protect individuals’ data with anonymization or pseudonymization.

+ Obtain consent for data processing and provide transparency.

+ Train employees in security best practices and raise awareness.

+ Monitor security posture continuously and update policies as needed.

+ Participate in peer reviews and provide feedback.

+ May consult with and lead cross-functional teams.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

+ BS/BA and 5 years of relevant experience OR

+ MS/MA or higher and 3 years of relevant experience OR

+ PhD and 1 year of relevant experience OR

+ AA and 14 years of relevant experience OR

+ HS/GED and 16 years of relevant experience

+ Demonstrated experience applying theoretical/fundamental computer science concepts through the design, development, configuration, implementation, and maintenance of computer infrastructure and networks

Preferred Qualifications:

+ Experience working in a complex Enterprise environment of 6,000+ users

+ Experience managing Microsoft SQL Server, Azure SQL Database, and AWS RDS

+ Experience in task automation using PowerShell, Bash, Python, or other languages

+ Knowledge of Cloud environments such as Microsoft Azure, Amazon AWS, Google Cloud Platform

+ Demonstrated ability to self-direct, prioritize, and manage multiple tasks and priorities

+ Strong interpersonal skills with ability to collaborate effectively in cross-functional teams

+ Demonstrated ability to solve challenging technical problems with innovative solutions

+ Customer service oriented and approachable

+ Exceptional communicator with both technical and nontechnical audiences

Additional Information

This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a federal security clearance.

Requirements:

  • Background Investigation: Applicants selected will be subject to a federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified matter in accordance 10 CFR 710, Appendix B.

Note: Applicants will be considered ineligible for security clearance processing by the U.S. Department of Energy until non-use of illegal drugs, including marijuana, for 12 months can be demonstrated.

Testing Designated Position

This position is a Testing Designated Position (TDP). The candidate selected for this position will be subject to pre-employment and random drug testing for illegal drugs, including marijuana, consistent with the Controlled Substances Act and the PNNL Workplace Substance Abuse Program.
